Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph illustrates past and present overweight rate and projected future overweight rate in nine selected nations.
Overall, USA constituted the highest percentage rate between 1970 and 2020, whereas Korea represented the lowest ratios from 2000 to 2020. The other seven countries showed relatively moderate level between 1980 and 2020.
To begin with, USA stood at 47% in 1970 and its ratio decreased at 42% in 1980 while the percentage sharply increased to 78% in 2020. However, the proportions for the England experienced fluctuations overall the period. In 1992, Canada experienced 49% ratio and it slightly decreased to 48% and then increased to 52%. The figure for Spain was at lowest point at almost 42% and it rose up to 52% in 2020. Moreover, share for Austria was 39% in 1980 and it increased to 46%. In addition, the percentage sharply increased for Australia from almost 32% to about 62%. Italy, France and Korea showed the lowest ratios at nearby 35%, 30% and 22% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the broad pattern that the USA is highest and Korea is among the lowest, and you include several country comparisons. However, the overview is too general: saying the other countries stayed at a “moderate level” does not capture their differing upward trends. Several details are inaccurate or unclear: the USA is shown at about 45% in 1972 and 74% in 2020, not 47% in 1970 and 78%; Spain’s final value is about 55%, not 52%; and the Australia figures are closer to 34% and 64%. The discussion also omits England’s rise and gives no clear time frame for some figures. Select the main trends accurately and support them with well-chosen comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview and a body paragraph, and signposting such as “To begin with” and “Moreover” helps indicate that more information follows. However, the body moves rapidly from country to country without a clear grouping or consistent chronological pattern. The sentence about Canada appears after England, but does not explain how the figures relate to the graph’s overall trends; the final sentence lists three countries without dates or a comparison. Some linking phrases, including “However” and “In addition,” do not establish a strong logical relationship. Group countries by similar trends or levels, and use clear time references so the progression is easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “illustrates,” “percentage,” “fluctuations,” “decreased,” and “increased,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “constituted the highest percentage rate.” However, several expressions are unnatural or imprecise: “highest percentage rate,” “lowest ratios,” and “moderate level” are not the most suitable collocations for describing proportions. “Share” is also used where “proportion” or “rate” would be clearer. Aim for precise, natural chart language and avoid varying terms when the variation makes the data less clear. The vocabulary is adequate, but collocational control is not consistently accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and more developed sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a time clause in “while the percentage sharply increased.” Most sentences communicate their basic meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the proportions for the England experienced” has an unnecessary article and an awkward subject construction, while “decreased at 42%” uses an incorrect preposition in the comparison. “The other seven countries showed relatively moderate level” also needs an article or plural form. Tense and sentence patterns are mostly understandable, but accuracy is uneven. Practise forming comparisons with “fell to” or “rose to,” and check articles, agreement and plural nouns when revising.
