IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The line graph below shows past and current overweight rates, as well as a projected future overweight rate in nine selected countries.
Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph illustrates the overweight rates in selected OECD countries, which are USA, England, Canada, Spain, Austria, Italy, Australia, France and Korea from 1970 to 2020.
Overall, it is clear that all nine figures underwent significant increase in percentage. The proportion overweight rate which was documented in the earliest year was USA, whereas Korea was relatively young participant.
USA overweight rates had the highest figure throughout the period. And had started at around 45%, approximately in the year 1973, making the figure the oldest representative compared to the other eight countries. Before it peaked at 70% in the year 2020, it experienced slight decline before 1980.
Other seven nations fluctuated from beginning years to 2020, England with under 50% in 1990, peaked later around just under 70%. Canada and Italy both started around 1995, accounting 50% and 37%, respectively. France started at 30% and dipped at 40% under Italy. Korea in 1997 accounted roughly at 25% then gradually ascended to 35%. Austria was the sole representative of constant increase in proportion overweight had around 35% in 1990 then consistenty rose to just under 65%, as it ranked third in overweight rates.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the countries and give an overview that rates generally rose, and you correctly note the USA’s early lead and Korea’s low starting point. However, the overview is weakened by saying all nine rates increased significantly, without distinguishing the scale or exceptions in their fluctuations. Several details are inaccurate or unclear: Austria did not rise to just under 65% (it ended at about 46.5%), and it was not the sole country with a consistently rising trend. The USA reached about 74% by 2020, rather than 70%. Some comparisons are also incomplete: Australia’s strong rise and its high projected endpoint are omitted, while France’s endpoint is described unclearly. Select the most important contrasts and report the figures and trends accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing selected countries. This helps the reader follow the general subject. However, progression within the final paragraph is difficult because it moves rapidly from England to Canada and Italy, then France, Korea and Austria, without grouping countries by similar levels or trends. The phrase “Other seven nations” is also confusing, since eight countries remain after the USA. Some linking is present, such as “Before” and “whereas,” but connections between comparisons are often missing, and the sentence beginning “And had started” is detached from the preceding sentence. Organise the details into clearer groups—for example, the highest-rate countries and the lower-rate countries—and use explicit comparisons to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “peaked,” “decline,” “fluctuated,” and “ascended,” and the main topic remains understandable. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices that reduce precision. “The proportion overweight rate” is redundant, “young participant” does not clearly describe a country’s later appearance in the data, and “dipped at 40% under Italy” is difficult to interpret. “Constant increase” is also unsuitable for a series that contains fluctuations, while “consistenty” is misspelled. Aim for standard graph language and accurate collocations, such as “the rate rose,” “the series begins,” and “remained below.” This would make your comparisons clearer and your vocabulary more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including a relative clause in the introduction and a time clause beginning “Before it peaked.” Most of the intended meaning can be understood, but some sentence structures are incomplete or awkward. “USA overweight rates had the highest figure throughout the period. And had started…” leaves the second sentence without a clear subject and finite verb. The overview’s “The proportion overweight rate which was documented…” is also an incomplete construction, and “Canada and Italy both started around 1995, accounting 50% and 37%” lacks a grammatical link between the figures and the countries. Use complete clauses, check subject–verb structure, and connect figures with forms such as “stood at” or “were approximately.” Greater control of these patterns would improve accuracy.
