Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates the trends in the overweight rates for nine selected OECD countries between 1970 and 2020, along with future projections for the future.
Overall, the proportion of overweight individual has shown a consistent upward trend in all nine countries throughout the period. While there are variations in the initial values and the pace of growth, every nation is pprojected to experience a further increase in these rates by 2020.
In 1070 the USA had the predominant proportion of overweight individuals at approximately 45%, while KOrea had the lowest, starting with below 20%. Over the following decades, the USA remained the country with the highest percentage, reaching nearly 70% by 2020. Conversely, although Korea experienced a significant upward trajectory, it maintained the lowest rate among the selected countries, remaining under 40% by the end of the period.
Other countries, such as France, England, Spain, Austria, Australia, Canada and Italy, followed a similar growth pattern. Bt the year 2000s, most of these nations saw their overweight rates blimb into the 40% to 50% rate. Projections indicate that by 2020, almost all these countries will have surpassed or closely approached the 50% mark, with the gaps between the different nations narrowing over time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You provide a relevant overview, identifying the broad rise across countries and correctly noting that the USA is highest while Korea remains lowest. However, the overview overstates the pattern: the USA dips slightly from about 45% to 43% early on, and several series fluctuate rather than rising consistently. Some details are also inaccurate or too general. Korea begins at about 25%, not below 20%, and the USA reaches roughly 74% by 2020 rather than nearly 70%. The claim that almost all countries approach or exceed 50% overlooks France, Italy, Austria and Korea, which remain below that level. To make the report more complete, select and compare key country figures and describe the notable differences in their trajectories more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and two detail paragraphs, and the information progresses logically from the overall pattern to country comparisons. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Conversely” and “By the year 2000s” help signal relationships between ideas. The final paragraph, however, groups seven countries together and gives only a broad statement about their rates, so the comparison becomes less informative and the reader cannot easily follow individual trends. The reference to “the gaps … narrowing” is also not clearly supported by examples. Improve this by grouping countries with similar levels or trajectories and using specific comparisons within each group, rather than listing many countries in one sentence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonably varied range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “trajectory,” “projections” and “surpassed,” and the meaning is generally clear. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing a graph: “predominant proportion” is not a natural way to identify the highest rate, and “blimb into the 40% to 50% rate” is unclear. There are also spelling and capitalisation slips, including “pprojected,” “KOrea” and “Bt.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and polish. Aim for precise, conventional graph language and proofread carefully; for example, describe rates as “rose to” a percentage or “remained below” a threshold.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While there are variations…” and a sentence with “although” to compare Korea with other countries. Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some grammatical control is still uneven: “the proportion of overweight individual has” has a singular/plural mismatch, while “between 1970 and 2020, along with future projections for the future” is awkwardly constructed and repetitive. The phrase “By the year 2000s” also has an incorrect time expression. Continue using varied structures, but check agreement and time phrases, and keep tense choices consistent when describing historical data and projections.
