Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph demonstrates the data proportion of past and current overweight rates along with a predicted future overweight rate in nine countries from 1970 to 2020.

Overall, it can seen that USA had gone through a spike between 1980 to 2020 and it had remained on top, whilst Korea had the least number of reported obesity data in both tenures of time.

Between 1970 and 1980 USA had witnessed a modest decline in their obesity data, however, the proportion increased drastically from 1980 to 2020 with highest reported data( 50% to 70%).Between (1980 to 2020) five countries; England, Spain, Austria, Australia, France showed a steady rose in obesity data, except for Spain it had experienced a considerable decline 2000 to 2010.(41% to 40

From 1990 to 2000 Italy and Korea, initially showed a decline (35% to 25%),in their obesity data, followed by considerable high volume data reported by the year 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad pattern that the USA remained highest and Korea lowest, and you attempt to describe changes across several countries. However, the overview is incomplete and some key details are inaccurate or unclear. The USA rose from about 43% in 1980 to roughly 74% in 2020, rather than simply from “50% to 70%.” Spain did not decline from 2000 to 2010: its rate rose overall, from around 47% in 2001 to 52% in 2009. The claim that Italy and Korea initially declined is also incorrect; both generally increased over the periods shown. Select a few reliable comparisons and give an accurate overview of the overall upward trend and the countries’ relative levels.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing country trends. Linking words such as “Overall,” “however,” and “followed by” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is difficult to follow because several countries and time periods are grouped together without a clear organising principle. The final sentence combines Italy and Korea despite their different starting points and trends, while the Spain comparison is unfinished. The parenthetical figures and abrupt ending also interrupt the flow. Organise the details into clear comparisons—for example, the highest-rate countries and the lower-rate countries—and use complete sentences with explicit time references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “modest decline,” “increased drastically,” “steady,” and “considerable.” These attempts help communicate changes, but several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing a graph. Phrases such as “data proportion,” “obesity data,” “least number of reported obesity data,” and “high volume data” confuse rates with data or counts. “A steady rose” is also an inaccurate word form and collocation. Prefer precise terms such as “the proportion,” “rate,” “rose steadily,” and “the lowest figure.” Repeating “obesity data” limits flexibility; vary this with “overweight rate” or “proportion of people who were overweight.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt complex sentences using contrast and time clauses, as in “Between 1970 and 1980 … however,” but grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make the intended meaning hard to follow. Examples include “it can seen” instead of “it can be seen,” “USA had gone through” without an appropriate article, and “five countries … showed a steady rose,” where the sentence structure and verb form are faulty. The sentence about Spain ends with an incomplete parenthesis and no completed thought, and punctuation is inconsistent, including missing spaces after full stops. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles, verb forms, and punctuation before submitting.
