Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the countries and give a broad comparison, noting that the USA is highest and Korea lowest. However, the overview is incomplete and several key details are inaccurate or unclear. The USA was about 45% in the early 1970s, not 50%, and it rose to roughly 74% by 2020; the statement that it was already above 70% in 2000 confuses the endpoint with an earlier year. Korea was around 25% in 1998, but about 35% in 2019, rather than 31% in 2020. The claim that Canada, Spain, Austria and France fluctuated and declined is misleading: all generally increased over the period. Select the main upward trends and compare the countries’ final levels more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable paragraph structure: an introduction and overview are followed by two paragraphs organised around years. This gives the reader some sense of sequence, and connectors such as “Overall,” “In contrast” and “Whereas” show an attempt to link ideas. However, the progression is not consistently clear because the discussion jumps between years and countries without a stable comparison. For example, the 1990 paragraph lists several countries, while the 2000 paragraph combines Korea’s starting point with the USA’s 2020 figure. “Whereas” also introduces a contrast that is not clearly supported by the trend described. Organise the body by broad groups or by start-to-end changes, and use references that make each comparison explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “rate,” “dramatic increasing” and “fluctuated,” and the reader can generally identify the subject of the report. However, the range is limited and several choices or spellings make the account less precise, such as “least record,” “rate record of overweight” and “went below.” “Obesity rate” is also less consistent with the chart’s measure than “proportion overweight.” Frequent spelling errors, including “Kroea,” “countires,” “Engkand” and “recored,” detract from clarity. Build a small set of accurate trend phrases and use them consistently—for example, “rose steadily,” “remained the lowest,” and “ended at approximately”—while checking spelling and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “Whereas,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors occur frequently in sentence structure and grammatical forms. The opening sentence lacks possessive and plural forms (“nine countries past…rate”), while “Overall, the survey of nine countries, selected are…” is an incomplete, awkward construction. Other examples include “USA had a dramatically increasing number” and “Korea had the lowest overweight data,” where the sentence patterns do not express the intended comparison clearly. Articles, agreement and tense control also need attention. Use a clear subject–verb structure for each trend, such as “The proportion in the USA rose from…to…,” and check each sentence for a complete clause and consistent past or projected time reference.
