Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the chart’s subject and time span, and it notes that the US rate dips before rising. However, the account is very limited and several key trends are unclear or inaccurate: Australia, Spain, England, France and Canada do not simply “fluctuate” throughout; most rise overall, with only small pauses or dips. The claim that Korea and Italy “remain constant” is also misleading, as both increase, particularly Italy after 2009. There is no clear overview of the main comparisons, such as the USA ending highest and Korea lowest. The response is also 20 words below the required minimum. To improve, give a concise overview and support it with accurate comparisons and selected figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic sequence of ideas, signalled by “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” “However,” and “In conclusion,” and the response stays broadly focused on the graph. However, these linking words often connect statements without making their relationship clear, and the ideas do not develop in a logical overview-to-details structure. For example, the sentence about several countries fluctuating is followed by a claim about Korea and Italy remaining constant, but neither point is explained with specific evidence. The final sentence repeats the task rather than summarising the main pattern. Organise the response into a short introduction, an overview of the highest and lowest rates and general direction, then grouped comparisons. Use fewer, more precise transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “rates,” “proportion,” “increases,” and “fluctuate,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the meaning unclear: “outweight” appears in place of “overweight,” “reach to substianl level” is not a natural description, and “rates strat” contains a spelling error. “Remain constant” is also an imprecise choice for countries whose rates rise over time. Aim for accurate trend language and collocations, such as “rose steadily,” “experienced a slight decline,” and “ended at approximately.” Proofread spelling and choose terms that describe the data precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple and linked sentences, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “It depict” instead of “It depicts,” “The years starts” instead of “The years start,” and “Korea and Italy after 1990 they remain constant,” which has an awkward clause structure and unclear subject. The sentence “As the rates of USA falls in 1980” is incomplete and has subject–verb agreement and article problems. Punctuation and spacing are also unreliable, as in “rates .It.” Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation. A few accurate complex sentences would help express comparisons more clearly.
