Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the USA as having the highest rate and Korea as the lowest, which are relevant overall features. However, the overview is vague and partly unsupported: the claim that some countries remained “relatively stable” is not illustrated, and the response reports only the USA and England, leaving most of the nine-country comparison unaddressed. Some figures are also inaccurate: the USA is projected to reach about 74% in 2020, not 75% in 2019, and England begins at about 47% in 1991, not 30% in 1990. The response is 43 words below the required minimum, which contributes to its limited coverage. Include a fuller overview and select accurate comparisons across several countries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic structure, with an opening, an overview and a paragraph beginning “To begin with,” so the reader can recognise the intended stages of the report. The ideas are generally related to the graph, and “Overall” and “whereas” provide some signposting and contrast. However, progression is limited because the body discusses only two countries and ends abruptly, without grouping or comparing the remaining trends. Several transitions are awkward or unclear, such as “this was followed by england in 1990,” which does not clearly connect the comparison to the preceding USA data. Improve the flow by organising countries into meaningful groups and using clear links to show how their rates compare over time.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some appropriate graph vocabulary, including “rate,” “fluctuated,” “relatively stable,” “rose substantially” and “peak.” These choices show an attempt to describe trends rather than simply list figures. However, the range is limited, and some wording is imprecise or unnatural, such as “accounted for the highest rate” and “recorded the lowest figures.” Repetition of “rate” and “around” also restricts variety. Use more precise terms for proportions and changes, and vary trend language—for example, describe a rate as “stood at,” “climbed to” or “remained below” another country’s figure. Check country-name capitalization as well, since “usa” and “england” should be written as “the USA” and “England.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a few different sentence forms, including a contrast with “While” and a time clause beginning “before,” but most sentences follow simple patterns and some complex attempts are faulty. For example, “While USA accounted for the highest rate.this was followed by england” has incorrect punctuation and an incomplete construction; “this was followed by england in 1990 recorded” also lacks a clear grammatical link between the clauses. There are errors with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “the rate of overweight nowadays,” and the tense in “what would it be in future” is not well controlled for describing a graph. Practise complete sentences with accurate punctuation and use past or projected-future forms consistently.
