IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The line graph below shows past and current overweight rates, as well as a projected future overweight rate in nine selected countries.
Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.0)
USA is leading overweight rates in OECD list with starting from 45% . Korea at the bottom in list with starting from 25% . Other six countries were at middle. Italy and Austria was the only country with almost linear graph than other 7. England and Australia almost sharewd the same pattern of rates. But Australia jumped little more than the England. spain and France showed the same curves but thay were starting from different points. THe difference was between Australia and France and is much greater that the started from with minor difference but ended with larger difference in it. Meanwhile Canada maintained the graph but the real ones were koreans who stayed at the bottom of ther chart through the timeline. Only USA kept on increasing ther rates higher than any one while all other OECD countries controlled over the time. But none of them reduced the rate significantly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several relevant broad features, including the USA’s high starting rate, Korea’s low position, and generally rising rates. However, the account only partially summarises the graph: it gives little clear coverage of the countries’ end points or the overall comparison across all nine nations. Some claims are inaccurate or unclear. For example, “all other OECD countries controlled over the time” suggests rates were controlled or fell, whereas the graph shows increases in every country; Canada also rises overall rather than simply maintaining its rate. The comparison between Australia and France is difficult to interpret and does not clearly report their different levels. Select a few major trends, state them accurately, and support them with approximate figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is an attempt to connect observations using “But,” “Meanwhile,” and “Only,” and the response moves from starting positions to patterns and later changes. However, the ideas are presented as one continuous sequence without clear paragraphing or a consistent overview-to-detail structure. Several links are hard to follow: “The difference was between Australia and France” does not specify what difference is meant, and “Meanwhile Canada maintained the graph” is unclear in relation to the preceding comparison. The repeated country-by-country observations also do not build a clear progression. Organise the response into an overview followed by grouped comparisons, such as the highest-rising countries and those with lower rates, and use explicit references to make each comparison clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “rates,” “pattern,” “curves,” and “increasing,” so the reader can recognise that it describes a line graph. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear. “Maintained the graph” does not naturally describe a trend, while “controlled over the time” misrepresents the data. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “sharewd,” “thay,” “THe,” and “ther,” which reduce accuracy and polish. Use precise trend language and check spelling carefully; for example, describe rates as rising, remaining relatively stable, or reaching a particular level rather than saying a country maintained a graph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentence forms, such as “Only USA kept on increasing their rates higher than any one while all other OECD countries controlled over the time,” but complex constructions are often faulty. Errors include subject–verb agreement in “Italy and Austria was,” missing or incorrect articles in “USA is leading” and “at middle,” and awkward tense choices such as “Other six countries were at middle” when describing the graph. Sentence boundaries and spacing are also inconsistent, with extra spaces before punctuation and abrupt shifts between clauses. These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to understand. Practise accurate simple comparisons first, then combine them using controlled clauses and consistent past or present tense.
