Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the USA as having the highest rate and attempts to compare several countries, so it does engage with the graph. However, the account is only minimally accurate and does not give a clear overview of the main trends across the nine countries. The USA figure is reported as 75% in 1970, whereas the graph begins at about 45% in 1972; the final comparisons are also substantially overstated, such as Canada at 65% and Spain at 52%. England is around 69% near 2020, while Canada and Spain are both about 55%. The response also omits the broad upward trend in most countries. Select a few reliable comparisons and describe the overall pattern before giving supporting figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response follows a basic sequence: it first discusses the USA over time and then compares countries near the end. This gives the reader a simple route through the information. However, the ideas are presented as one continuous paragraph, and the repeated pattern of “the ratio of overweight people” makes the progression mechanical. Some comparisons are difficult to follow, particularly “65% than as compare to England,” because the relationship between the figures is unclear. Group the information into an overview and a paragraph of key comparisons, and use clear linking phrases such as “by contrast” or “similarly.” This would make the organisation easier to follow without relying on repeated sentence openings.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general subject and some comparisons, with repeated use of relevant terms such as “ratio,” “increase,” and “compare.” However, the range is basic and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a graph. “Ratio” is not the best term for the percentages shown; “proportion” or “rate” is more suitable. Phrases such as “increase more little” and “increased fastly” do not express the intended trends naturally, while country names including “Austaria,” “Autralia,” and “Canda” are misspelled. Use a small set of precise trend verbs and check spelling of labels copied from the graph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Most sentences use simple subject–verb patterns, and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. There are attempts to describe change over time, but verb forms and agreement are often inaccurate: “This graph show us” should be “This graph shows,” and “the ratio … are become less” needs a correct verb construction. Articles and comparison structures are also inconsistent, as in “in USA” and “as compare to other nine countries.” Sentence boundaries and spacing are uneven, and the response relies heavily on short, repetitive statements. Practise accurate present-tense descriptions and past-tense reporting, then combine related information using controlled clauses such as “while” and “whereas.”
