Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates the information about the huge weight rates of past and present along predicted go beyond in the future in nine selected countries.

Overall, The USA weight rates showed high trends in overall the whole period whereas, Korea has showed the most smallest and lowest trend in throughout the time period. However, France and England have showed some fluctuations while Australia faced an upward and steady trend till 2020.

Starting from the most straight forward upward trend of USA in 1970 weight rates started from approximately 50% and experienced an upward trend till 70% in 2020 while Korea past rates started from 20% in 2000 and eventually reached at 30% in the future.

Turning to the next category of France and England, which started from 30% and 45% respectively in 1990 and experienced some fluctuations throughout the whole time period till 2020. However, in 1990 Italy faced some gradual increase til 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You provide an overview by identifying the USA as having the highest rates and Korea the lowest, and you mention several countries and broad trends. However, the response only partially reports the graph’s main features. The USA begins at about 45%, not approximately 50%, and Korea’s data start around 1998, rather than 2000; its projected figure is about 35%, not 30%. The claim that France and England both fluctuate is also too broad: England rises substantially overall, with only small variations, while France generally increases. Important comparisons, such as Australia’s strong rise and the relatively high projected rates for the USA and England, are not developed. Select a few accurate comparisons and support them with key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping countries. Phrases such as “Overall,” “Starting from,” and “Turning to” help signal movement between sections. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph introduces Italy without giving a clear comparison or completing its trend, and the grouping of France and England does not explain how their patterns differ. Some linking is awkward or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “However.” Improve the organisation by grouping countries with similar trends, then moving through the main comparisons in a clear order. Ensure each paragraph develops one complete point rather than listing countries.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant graph vocabulary, including “upward trend,” “fluctuations,” and “gradual increase,” which helps communicate the general subject. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the meaning difficult to follow. “Huge weight rates” is not an appropriate description of the data, and “predicted go beyond in the future” does not clearly express projection. Phrases such as “most smallest and lowest trend” are redundant and imprecise. The vocabulary range is also repetitive, with “trend” and “whole time period” used several times. Use standard terms such as “proportion of people who were overweight,” “projected rate,” and “rose steadily,” and check that each phrase describes a rate or a trend accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning “while” and “which,” but complex structures are often faulty. For example, “Overall, The USA weight rates showed high trends … whereas, Korea has showed” has problems with sentence punctuation, tense consistency, and subject–verb construction. In “rates started from approximately 50% and experienced an upward trend,” the rates themselves are presented as experiencing a trend, which makes the sentence structure unclear. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and verb forms, as in “Korea has showed” and “Italy faced some gradual increase.” Use past tense consistently for historical data, and form shorter, controlled sentences before adding subordinate clauses.
