Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line gragh illustrates the past as well as a projected future overweight rates in nine selected OECD countries between 1970 and 2020.
Overall, the proportion of overweight people increased in all nine countries over the period. The USA had the highest overweight rate while Korea had the lowest rate among all the countries.
In the USA, the overweight rate had significantly increased from 45% to 75% over the period between 1970 and 2020. England and Canada has also increased gradually where England's rate increased from around 46% to 70% and Canada slightly decreased from 50-4

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the overall upward trend and correctly note that the USA is highest and Korea lowest, which are relevant main features. However, the response reports only a small part of the graph and does not provide a complete summary: the final comparison about Canada is cut off, and most countries—including Australia, Spain, Austria, Italy, France and Korea—are not described beyond the overview. Some figures are broadly accurate, such as the USA rising from about 45% to 75%, but the period is given as 1970–2020 even though the USA series begins around 1972. The response is also 54 words below the required minimum. Add a fuller overview and select key comparisons across the high, middle and low rates, with accurate start and end figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph beginning to report country details. The overview is placed appropriately and gives the reader a clear general direction. However, the body paragraph ends abruptly at “Canada slightly decreased from 50-4”, so the progression is incomplete and the final comparison cannot be understood. The use of “where” to connect England and Canada also makes the relationship between the information less clear. To improve, complete each comparison and organise the body into a logical grouping, such as the highest-rate countries and the lower-rate countries. Use linking expressions selectively to show contrasts and trends rather than leaving relationships implicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use several relevant terms for describing a graph, including “proportion,” “rate,” “increased,” and “gradually,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, the vocabulary range is limited and some choices or forms are inaccurate: “line gragh” is a spelling error, and “a projected future overweight rates” is not a natural phrase. Repeating “rate” and “increased” also limits precision. Try using accurate graph language such as “the proportion of people who were overweight,” “rose,” “climbed,” or “remained the lowest.” Check spelling and collocations carefully, and use a wider selection of trend verbs to distinguish steady growth from sharper rises or small fluctuations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You produce some clear simple sentences, particularly “The USA had the highest overweight rate while Korea had the lowest rate.” There is also an attempt to use a more complex comparison in the final paragraph. However, errors in agreement and sentence construction remain: “England and Canada has also increased” should use a plural verb, and “where England’s rate increased…” does not connect the comparison smoothly. The final sentence is incomplete, which prevents the grammar and meaning from being fully clear. Tense control is also uneven in “had significantly increased” when describing a trend across the period. Practise complete comparative sentences and check subject–verb agreement, verb tense, and punctuation before finishing.
