Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph compares the overweight population in nine OECD countries in the past and at present, and presents projections about the future.

Overall, the USA, England and Australia experienced a steady increase in the population of the overweight people, with the USA experiencing the strongest growth. While other countries like Korea, France and Italy saw a very low increase in the overweight people, with Korea at the lowest.

The USA started under 50%, dipped in 1980s and surged up then continuously reaching above 70% in 2020, which is the highest point. England 's ratio was also slight less than 50% at the start but increased gradually and ended up at approximately 70% in 2020. Australia was just above 30% but it climbed to more than 60% at the end.

Korea's starting point was in the approximately 20% and ended up at arounf 35% in 2020, which is the lowest among all. France was around 30% at the start and this ratio was approximately 45%, at the end. Italy started at less than 40%,raised to approximately 45% at the end, with a slight dip in the middle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad upward trend and give a useful overview, noting that the USA rises most strongly and Korea remains lowest. Several reported figures and trends are broadly accurate: the USA ends above 70%, Australia climbs from the low 30s to above 60%, and Korea finishes at about 35%. However, the overview is selective and partly unclear: “other countries like Korea, France and Italy saw a very low increase” understates France’s rise from about 31% to 44%, and the response omits important comparisons for Canada, Spain and Austria. The USA’s early dip and later rise are described, but the account of England is not quite accurate because its series begins in the early 1990s, not at the start of the graph. Develop a fuller overview and compare more of the countries’ final levels and changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing groups of countries. This gives the reader a generally logical route through the information, and phrases such as “While” and “which is the lowest” help connect comparisons. The organisation is not fully effective, however, because the final paragraphs select only six of the nine countries, leaving Canada, Spain and Austria unreported, and the grouping in the overview is not consistently supported by the details that follow. There are also small cohesion and punctuation distractions, such as “Overall, the” and the abrupt transition from Australia to Korea. To strengthen progression, group countries by comparable trends or final rates and use clear linking phrases to show how each group relates to the overview.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “dipped,” “surged,” “climbed,” and “gradually,” and the meaning is generally clear. Some choices are imprecise or repetitive, particularly repeated references to “the population of the overweight people” and “this ratio”; “proportion of people who were overweight” and “rate” would be more natural and concise. “Strongest growth” is understandable, though “largest increase” is more precise for the data. There are also spelling and form slips, including “arounf,” which should be “around,” and “raised” where “rose” is needed. Aim for accurate collocations and vary the language used to describe proportions and changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which is the lowest among all” and a contrast structure beginning “While other countries…”. Most of the message remains understandable, but some errors in sentence construction and punctuation reduce accuracy. The overview’s “While other countries … saw a very low increase” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence, and “Overall, the” needs a space after the comma. Other examples include “England 's ratio” with incorrect spacing and “Korea's starting point was in the approximately 20%,” where the article and preposition pattern are faulty. Practise complete clause structures and check articles, prepositions, apostrophes and comma spacing while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
