Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates previous and future rate of overweight among nine different OECD countries.

Overall, the most striking feature is that most of the countries among nine overweight rates gradually increased over the mentioned periords. Meanwhile, USA and Canada showed initial decline, although in the later proportion rose by the end of the time. USA was in top position and korea remained in the bottom positon.

USA started about 1973 represents 47% approximately then it slightly decreased over the next few years and from the 1978 it again inclined significantly. Canada also shows same trend started at 1995 though the increase rate was not so significant Unlike USA.

Most of the other countries had risen the proportion of overweight started at different time frames. Korea started at 1998 and steadily increased upto 1918. Spain data reached crossing 2020 and showed upto approximately 2022 with a slight

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad upward trend and note that the USA is highest while Korea is lowest, which are relevant main features. However, the response reports very little of the graph accurately or completely: the USA begins at about 45% in 1972, not 47% in 1973, and Canada’s series begins in 1994, not 1995. The claim that both countries show an initial decline is not supported for Canada, whose rate fluctuates before rising overall. The final comparisons are incomplete, and “Spain data reached crossing 2020” does not clearly describe the chart. The response also falls three words short of the required minimum. Include a clear overview and select a few accurate comparisons across the countries and years.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs attempting to describe country trends. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “Most of the other countries” show an effort to connect ideas. However, progression is difficult to follow because the country descriptions are incomplete and some references are unclear, particularly “in the later proportion” and “Spain data reached crossing 2020.” The final sentence stops after “with a slight,” leaving the point unfinished. Group countries by clear similarities or contrasts, and make each paragraph develop one complete point. Use linking words to express precise relationships rather than relying on broad transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “gradually increased,” “decline,” and “significantly,” and the country names make the subject clear. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “overweight rates,” “inclined significantly,” and “reached crossing 2020,” which make parts of the report hard to interpret. There are also spelling errors in “periords,” “korea,” and “positon.” Aim for precise graph language: describe rates as rising, falling, fluctuating, or reaching a level, and use “overweight rate” consistently. Proofreading spelling and choosing natural collocations would make your meaning clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a mix of simple statements and longer sentences, including a contrast with “Meanwhile” and a clause beginning “although.” However, many sentences contain errors in tense, agreement, articles, or sentence construction. For example, “USA started about 1973 represents 47% approximately” combines incompatible verb forms, while “Most of the other countries had risen the proportion” uses an incorrect structure. “Canada also shows same trend started at 1995” is also missing grammatical elements and has unclear tense control. The unfinished final sentence further weakens accuracy. Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and keep past descriptions in the past tense while using future forms only for projections.
