Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph represent past and current overweight rates. In the 70's we can see that the USA had already a start compared to other countries with about 45, its had a little decrease in the end of the century but its continued to increase in the future years in an exponentiel line, its may attend more than 70% in 2020. other contries like Italy, Austria and Spain have an average rate, they are more stable than the others with rates that attend almost 50% for Spain. the rate in Canada and France continue to increase with the years with picks in 2020 of 55% and 43%. Australia and England have a very worrying state, they increase quiet quickly compared to the others with abput 70% for England who is reaching USA, and 65% for Australia who started with a lowkey low rate of 32% in the end of the 1980. while Korea is the lowest rate with a start at 25% in the end of the 90's with an increasing in the early 2000's but its a pretty stable state; its can reach 35% in 2020.

We can observe the the overweight rates keeps increasing over the years and we should be worried about it and try to prevent it because its can be very dangerous for our health.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important broad patterns: the USA is among the highest, Korea remains lowest, and rates generally rise. You also include useful comparisons, such as England approaching the USA and Australia increasing from a lower starting point. However, coverage is partial and some details are inaccurate or unclear. The USA is projected at about 74% in 2020, rather than merely “more than 70%”; Australia begins at about 34% in 1990, not 32% in the late 1980s; and the graph shows England at about 69% in 2019, not 70% in 2020. The final advice about health is not required for this data summary. A clearer overview and more precise selection of key figures would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response groups countries into comparisons, which gives the reader some sense of how their rates differ, and it moves broadly from the USA to other countries before ending with a general statement. However, nearly all the information is packed into one long paragraph, with several ideas joined by commas and repeated “its” references. This makes the progression difficult to follow and sometimes obscures which country or trend is being described. The final sentence shifts from reporting the graph to giving health advice, so it does not work as a focused conclusion. Organise the response into a short overview and separate paragraphs for the higher- and lower-rate countries, using clear linking phrases and unambiguous references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “increase,” “decrease,” “stable,” and “rate,” and phrases such as “reaching USA” communicate a comparison. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or informal, which can make the description less precise. Examples include “picks” for peak values, “worrying state,” “lowkey low rate,” and “attend” where you mean reach. Spelling errors such as “exponentiel,” “contries,” and “abput” are also noticeable. Use standard graph-description language and check spelling; for example, describe rates as “rose steadily” or “remained relatively stable,” rather than relying on general or conversational wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to connect several ideas in longer sentences, but these structures are often faulty, and frequent errors sometimes make the relationships between ideas difficult to understand. For example, “The graph represent” has subject–verb disagreement, while “its had a little decrease” and “its continued to increase” misuse the pronoun and verb form. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, as in “the overweight rates keeps increasing.” Most sentences rely on simple present-tense clauses joined together, so the range is limited. Practise accurate past and future forms for the timeline, and divide long sentences into shorter, correctly punctuated statements before attempting more complex comparisons.
