Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Here is a graph on which the past and current overweight rate are discussed for different countries. Nine countries a mentioned and their past and future overweight rates are compared. We will discuss the main features in the below paragraphs.

The graph is between the years on 'x' axis and the proportion overweight on 'y' axis. Years start from 1970 with an increment of 10 and the proportion overweight starts from 20% with an increase of 10%.

The mentnd cntis are USA, England, Canada, Spain, Italy, Australia, France, Korea and Austria. This graph shows that the proportion overweight increases with the increase of time. IIts value is different for different countries. For USA, from 1970 to 1980 its value decreases then increases till 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the topic and names all nine countries, and it reports one accurate feature: the USA rate falls between about 1972 and 1980 before rising towards 2020. However, the task asks for a summary of the main features and comparisons, and these are largely missing. The statement that rates increase over time is broadly true, but it is too general and overlooks useful contrasts, such as the USA having the highest projected rate and Korea remaining the lowest. The graph’s axes are described instead of its key trends, and no other country’s figures or changes are analysed. The response is also two words below the required minimum. To improve, give a clear overview and support it with selected comparisons and approximate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, a description of the axes, a brief comment on the countries and trend, and a concluding sentence. This gives the response some organisation, and phrases such as “For USA” signal a shift to a specific example. However, the ideas do not develop in a clear sequence from an overview to supporting comparisons. The axis description takes space without advancing the summary, while the final sentence repeats the task rather than drawing together the main findings. Connections between points are limited, and the conclusion is difficult to follow. A more coherent response would group the countries by high and low rates or by similar trends, using clear links between the overview and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion overweight,” “rates,” “countries,” and “graph,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is narrow and several expressions are inaccurate or awkward, such as “the graph is between the years” and “the detailed analysis … and compare each othe.” There are also spelling and typing errors, including “mentnd,” “cntis,” “IIts,” and “countrs,” which reduce clarity and control. Repetition of “graph,” “value,” and “increase” limits precision. Use standard terms such as “line graph,” “percentage,” “rose,” and “declined,” and check spelling carefully. More precise trend vocabulary would help describe the countries without relying on general statements.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response mainly uses short, simple sentence patterns, with a few attempts at longer structures, such as “For USA, from 1970 to 1980 its value decreases then increases till 2020.” Basic meaning is often recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “Nine countries a mentioned” has an incorrect verb form, and “the past and current overweight rate are discussed” has a number mismatch between “rate” and “are.” The sentence about the graph being “between the years on 'x' axis” is also structurally unclear. Tense use shifts between present and past when describing historical data. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and past-tense reporting, then combine simple sentences with controlled clauses to show comparisons.
