Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The line graph illustrates the information about past and current overweight rates, as well as a projected future overweight rate in nine selected countries. They are USA, England, Canada, Italy, Austria, Australia, France, Spain and Korea.
Overall, all countries experienced an upward trend over the year. USA is the one which covers the highest percentage in past and projected future, while the korea performs the least trend in end year.
Looking at the details, the USA stood at over 40% in the year 1970, but it rose gradually and reaches upto slightly over the 70% in the end year. The Austria and Italy started from the different point whereas in the ending time they reach at same point. The England started from

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and name all nine countries, and you make a relevant attempt at an overview by noting that rates generally rise and that the USA is highest. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: it ends mid-sentence at “The England started from,” and gives almost no usable comparison or coverage of the other countries. The claim that Austria and Italy “reach at same point” is not supported by the chart: their final rates are about 46.5% and 45.5%, respectively. Korea is lowest at the end, while the USA is highest. The response is 105 words, below the required 150; this leaves the main features substantially undeveloped. Add a complete overview and selected, accurate comparisons across the countries.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview beginning “Overall,” and a detail paragraph beginning “Looking at the details.” This gives the reader some sense of the intended organisation. However, progression is weak because the response stops abruptly in the middle of “The England started from,” and the details are not grouped into clear comparisons or stages. The overview and detail paragraph also repeat the general idea of rising rates without developing it. Use complete paragraphs, organise countries with similar patterns or levels together, and connect comparisons explicitly—for example, contrast the USA’s high projected rate with Korea’s lower one. This would make the sequence of information easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the topic and communicate a few basic trends, using phrases such as “upward trend,” “percentage,” and “rose gradually.” However, the range is limited and some expressions are awkward or imprecise, which makes the report less natural. “Covers the highest percentage” is not a suitable way to describe a rate, and “performs the least trend” does not clearly express that Korea has the lowest final figure. “Different point” is also too vague for a chart comparison. Choose precise language for rates and comparisons, such as “recorded the highest proportion” and “remained the lowest.” Vary trend verbs and use accurate terms such as “rose,” “increased,” and “ended at.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use some basic sentence forms successfully, including “The line graph illustrates…” and “Overall, all countries experienced an upward trend.” There is also an attempt to use a contrast with “but” in the USA sentence. However, the range is narrow, and errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence completion are noticeable. In “it rose gradually and reaches,” the past-tense sequence should be maintained; “the korea” also has incorrect capitalisation and article use. “The Austria and Italy started…” has an unnecessary article, while the final sentence is incomplete. Practise writing complete comparisons with consistent tense, for example, “The USA rose from about 45% to a projected 74%.” Check each sentence for a clear subject and finished verb clause.
