Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the information about past and current overweight rates, as well as a projected future overweight rate in nine selected countries. They are the USA, England, Canada, Italy, Austria, Australia, France, Spain and Korea.

Overall, all countries experienced an upward trend over the years. USA is the one which covers the highest percentage in past and projected future, while the korea performs the lowest rate in end year.

Looking at the details, the USA stood at over 40% in the year 1970, but it rose gradually and reached upto slightly over the 70% in the end year. The Austria and Italy started from the different point whereas in the ending time they reach at same point. England started from the about 48% the it fluctuate and reach just at the point 70%. Korea stood at less than 30% in the year between 1990 and 2000 while it rise slowly upto near at 35%.France shows the most fluctuating rate over the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the graph’s subject and give an overview that recognises a general rise, with the USA highest and Korea lowest at the end. Several details are relevant, including the USA’s increase to just over 70% and Korea’s rise to about 35%. However, the overview is incomplete and some claims are inaccurate or unclear: the USA is not highest throughout the period, and the statement that Austria and Italy finish at the same point is incorrect (about 46.5% versus 45.5%). The final comparison also misreports Canada as exceeding 60%, when it ends near 55%; Spain finishes near 55%, not above it. More accurate comparisons across the countries and clearer selection of key features would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details and a concluding comparison. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Looking at the details” signal the stages of the report. However, progression within the body is limited: countries are mentioned in quick succession without a clear grouping or consistent comparison, and the final “In conclusion” introduces information that would fit better in the main description. Some links are also unclear, particularly “the year between 1990 and 2000” and “Canada and spain meet the over 60% and over 55%.” Organising countries by high, middle and low rates, and linking each comparison explicitly, would make the account easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “upward trend,” “percentage,” “fluctuating” and “rise,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “covers the highest percentage,” “reach at same point,” and “meet the over 60%.” “Sudden rise” is also not a precise description of Australia’s overall gradual increase. Repetition of “stood,” “rise” and “reach” reduces flexibility, while country names are inconsistently capitalised (“korea,” “spain”). Aim for more precise trend language and standard collocations, for example “recorded the highest proportion,” “ended at a similar level,” and “increased steadily.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes simple statements and some attempts to connect ideas with “while” and “whereas,” but the range of sentence structures is limited and errors occur frequently enough to make several sentences awkward. Examples include “USA is the one which covers,” where an article is needed, and “The Austria and Italy started … they reach,” which has article and tense problems. In “England started from the about 48% the it fluctuate,” the sentence structure, article use and verb form are faulty. There are also punctuation and spacing issues, such as “35%.France.” Use past tense consistently for historical data, add articles where required, and check sentence boundaries and subject–verb agreement.
