Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line chart illustrates the ratio of past and present overweight rates and projected future overweight of nine OECD countries.

The vertical axis shows the proportion overweight and the horizontal axis displays the years from 1970 to 2020 and also there are countries mentioned (USA, England, Canada, Spain, Italy, Austria, Australia, France and at last Korea).

At first, USA plummeted from around 46% to 42% from 1970 to 1980 then increased significantly from 1980 to 2020 with the proportional overweight from 42% to 75%, Australia also made its overweight from 32% to 62% from 1990 to 2020.

But there are many countries who did not increase their overweight as well as others like if we talk about Korea its progress is just 10% in first two decades of the 20th century, also Austria looks the same in this graph with just 39% to 47% in its overweight from 1980 to 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response identifies the chart’s subject and reports a few relevant trends, including the USA’s initial decline followed by a rise and increases in Australia, Korea and Austria. However, it addresses the task only partially: there is no clear overview of the main pattern across all nine countries, and most series are omitted. Some details are inaccurate or unclear. For example, the USA begins at about 45% and reaches roughly 74%, rather than 46% and 75%; Australia rises from about 34% to 64%, not 32% to 62%. Korea’s increase is about ten percentage points over roughly two decades, but calling this the “first two decades of the 20th century” is incorrect. Include the overall ranking and compare more countries accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the chart, describes the axes, and then gives examples of trends. This provides some organisation, but the progression is limited because the information is not grouped into clear comparisons, and the final paragraph shifts between countries without a consistent organising principle. Linking phrases such as “At first,” “But,” and “also” help connect ideas, although “But” does not clearly signal the contrast intended, and “as well as others” makes the comparison difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and grouped details, and connect countries by shared patterns or contrasting rates. This would make the relationships between the selected figures clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “increased significantly,” and “plummeted,” and the country and percentage references are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing data. “Made its overweight” and “its progress is just 10%” do not clearly express changes in rates, while “countries who did not increase their overweight as well as others” is awkward and potentially misleading. “At last Korea” is also an unsuitable way to list the final country. Choose precise terms such as “the rate rose,” “increased by around ten percentage points,” and “remained comparatively low.” Avoid using “plummeted” for a modest decline.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, and the main message can usually be understood. However, control is uneven, particularly in the longer sentences, which contain faulty or unclear structures. For example, “The vertical axis shows … and the horizontal axis displays … and also there are countries mentioned” joins several ideas awkwardly; “there are many countries who did not increase their overweight” has an unclear relative clause and agreement pattern. The phrase “from 1970 to 1980 then increased” also needs clearer punctuation or a linking structure. Use shorter, well-controlled sentences and check articles, clause construction, and punctuation. A wider range of accurate comparisons would improve grammatical control.
