Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph displays past and current overweight rates, as well as a projected future overweight rate in nine OECD countries.Proportion overweight rates increased from 45% to 75% from 1971 to 2020 for USA. This is the maximum hike amoung all other countries.
The lowest projected future overweight rate is for Korea. In 1990, England had 48% rate that now estimated to be at 70% by 2020. Canada have a very stable trend. It is proposed to be fluctuated by only 5%. Next comes Spain that was at 44% in 1985. In 2020 it is expected to be at 55%. Australia and France overweight rates starts with almost same pace. Australia shows a great upward graph till 2020 as comapred to France. Italy is also pretty stable with only 5% increase.
Concludingly, all the OECD countries projected future overweight rates are tremendously high compared to past rates.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the graph’s subject and report several relevant comparisons, including the USA’s strong rise, Korea’s lowest projected rate, and increases in Spain, Canada and Italy. However, the overview is limited: saying all rates are “tremendously high” is vague, and the response does not clearly summarise the overall ranking or contrast the highest and lowest countries. Some figures or dates are inaccurate: the USA reaches about 74% in 2020, not 75% from 1971; England is about 47% in 1991 and 69% in 2019, rather than 48% in 1990 and 70% in 2020. The Australia–France comparison is also underdeveloped. The response is 132 words, below the 150-word minimum; the 15 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Add a fuller overview and accurate, selected details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable sequence: it introduces the graph, discusses several countries, and ends with a concluding statement. Country names also help readers follow the comparisons. However, the body is largely a series of separate observations rather than a clearly grouped account of the main patterns. For example, the USA and Korea could be compared as the extremes, while the remaining countries could be organised by their approximate rates or trends. Transitions such as “Next comes” and “Concludingly” feel mechanical, and the final sentence repeats a general claim instead of synthesising the data. The missing space after “countries.” also disrupts presentation. Use a distinct overview and organise details into purposeful paragraphs with clearer links.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “projected,” “stable trend,” “upward graph,” and “increase.” These choices make the general topic understandable, and you attempt to vary your wording rather than relying only on “go up.” However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a data report: “maximum hike,” “great upward graph,” “same pace,” and “tremendously high” do not describe the figures precisely. There are also spelling errors, including “amoung” and “comapred,” and “Concludingly” is not a natural linking expression. Choose standard trend language and use it consistently—for example, describe rates as rising, remaining relatively stable, or reaching a projected level. More precise vocabulary would make comparisons clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You produce mostly understandable sentences and attempt some varied structures, such as “In 2020 it is expected to be at 55%” and “Australia shows a great upward graph till 2020 as compared to France.” This shows some ability to report projections and make comparisons. However, several grammatical errors remain. In “Canada have a very stable trend,” the subject requires a singular verb; “Australia and France overweight rates starts” has problems with possession and subject–verb agreement; and “It is proposed to be fluctuated” uses an incorrect passive construction. The opening also needs a space after the full stop. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy. Practise agreement, possessive forms, and natural structures for projections, such as “is projected to fluctuate.”
