Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the chart’s subject and gives a relevant overall comparison: the USA is described as having the largest proportion, while Korea is said to have the lowest. These are broadly supported by the data, particularly toward the end of the period. However, the overview is incomplete and the response does not report any specific changes, comparisons between other countries, or supporting figures. It also stops before summarising the main features of the graph. The required minimum of 150 words is not met; at 46 words, there is not enough coverage to address the task adequately. To improve, add an overview of the general upward trend and select several key country comparisons, supported with approximate values.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the opening sentence introduces the chart, and “Overall” signals a summary of its main message. The comparison between the USA and Korea gives the reader a simple point of focus. However, the response ends after this overview, so there is no progression into details or a clear paragraph structure. The final phrase, “while the korea had the lowest,” is also incomplete, leaving the comparison unfinished. Develop a clear sequence by introducing the graph, presenting an overview, and then grouping relevant country trends into detail paragraphs. Complete each sentence and use linking expressions only where they clarify relationships between the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a few relevant terms, including “line chart,” “rates,” “percentage,” and “proportion,” so the topic is recognisable. However, the vocabulary range is very limited, and some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “contributes the large percentage” does not naturally describe a rate, and “in selcted OCED” contains spelling errors and an incorrect organisation name. “Many different countries” is also vague when the chart presents nine selected countries. Use precise chart language such as “the proportion of people who were overweight,” “recorded,” and “projected,” and check spelling of country and organisation names. A wider range of accurate trend verbs would help describe the data rather than relying on general terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response shows some control of basic sentence patterns, including a present-tense introduction (“The given line chart illustrates…”) and an overview beginning with “Overall it can be seen that…”. However, the range is narrow, with no developed sentences describing changes or comparisons. There are also errors in sentence boundaries and punctuation: there is no space after the full stop before “Overall,” and the final clause, “while the korea had the lowest,” is incomplete. The article and capitalisation in “the korea” are also incorrect. Practise writing complete comparative sentences, for example, stating which country’s rate rose most and how it compared with another. Use full stops and commas consistently, and ensure every clause has a complete grammatical structure.
