Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response makes a limited attempt to describe the graph, but it does not give a reliable overview of the main trends across the nine countries. It identifies the USA as highest and Korea as lowest, which broadly matches the data, yet several key figures and dates are substantially inaccurate: the USA is reported at 75% in 1975, although it was about 45% in the early 1970s and reached roughly 74% only by 2020; England did not reach 70% in 1985. The claim that all countries’ rates fall after the USA is also unsupported, as most rise over time. Austria is omitted, and the comparisons are often unclear or incorrect. To improve, summarise the overall upward pattern and compare the highest and lowest countries using accurate, relevant examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation: the response begins with an introduction, follows with a general statement, and then gives examples in a separate paragraph. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the comparisons jump between countries and years without a clear organising principle. Phrases such as “In 1980” and “In 1985” do not consistently connect to the dates or figures in the graph, while “After USA” leaves the relationship between ideas unclear. The overview also repeats the task description rather than guiding the reader through the main features. Grouping the information into a clear overview and comparisons of higher versus lower rates, with accurate time references and linking phrases, would make the account easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “overweight rate,” “percentage,” “highest,” and “lowest,” so the general subject is usually recognisable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repeated or imprecise: “weight” is used where “proportion overweight” or “rate” is needed, and “has the 75% of weight” is not a natural way to report a statistic. There are also spelling errors such as “upcomming,” “overal,” “horizontial,” and “counrty,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise chart language and vary reporting verbs, for example, “stood at,” “rose to,” and “remained below.” Check spelling and use standard terms for proportions and rates.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response communicates its basic meaning through mostly simple sentence patterns, and some sentences are understandable, such as “Korea has 35% of overweight.” There is an attempt to use longer structures, including “which is closer to USA,” but control is inconsistent. Errors include missing articles and awkward noun phrases (“USA has the highest weight”), agreement problems (“other remaining countries has”), and incomplete or unclear constructions (“After USA all the country percentage…”). Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, particularly around commas and sentence openings. Practise accurate simple comparisons first, then combine them with controlled clauses using “while” or “whereas.” More reliable articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries would make the information clearer.
