Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the graph’s subject and attempt to compare several countries, including the USA, Korea, France, Australia, Italy, Spain, Canada and England. However, the response only minimally fulfils the task: the overview is incomplete, and several figures or trends are inaccurate or unclear. For example, the USA is not described as having the highest rate in 1970; its rate was about 45%, rising to roughly 74% by 2020. Korea was the lowest at the end, at about 35%, but the response gives no clear comparison of the overall pattern across countries. The statement that rates were “20% and reached at 35%” is not tied clearly to a country or period. The response is also 118 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail provided. Select key start/end figures and describe the main upward trends accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and an overview before moving to country details. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “whilst” and “also” show an effort to connect ideas. However, the body does not follow a clear comparison or time-based progression: it moves from an unclear 1970 figure to France, Australia, Italy, Spain, Canada and England without grouping or consistently explaining the changes. Some connections are difficult to follow, particularly “Whereas it followed by France” and “Spain also almost 45% which followed by the Canada similar percentage.” The final sentence is incomplete, leaving the comparison unfinished. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs and group countries with similar levels or trends; make each comparison explicit and complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a graph, including “rates,” “starting from,” “rose” and “percentage,” and the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word combinations are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the intended meaning unclear. For instance, “stopped at 45%” is not a natural way to describe a final figure, while “stuck at 70” suggests no change and omits the unit. “Future overweight rates” is repeated even when discussing past or current data, and “in last year” is imprecise. Aim for accurate, varied trend language such as “increased to,” “stood at,” “remained broadly stable” and “by 2020.” Use “proportion” or “share” where appropriate, and include the percentage sign consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including a sentence beginning “Overall” and clauses joined with “while” and “whilst.” However, the range is limited, and frequent errors in sentence structure, tense, agreement and punctuation sometimes make the message difficult to interpret. For example, “the highest future overweight rates in the USA” lacks a complete verb, and “rates was” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. In “it rose by 15% in last year,” the article and time expression are faulty, while “Whereas it followed by France” is not a complete grammatical clause. The final sentence, “stuck at 70,” is also unfinished. Practise complete subject–verb sentences, consistent past-tense reporting, and accurate clause joining; check that every sentence has a clear subject and verb.
