Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the past, present and future porportions of overweight in nine different countries from 1970 to 2020.

Overall, the rates of all countries increased with the passage of time. USA remained consistent at the top from the begining till end. Korea recorded with minor numbers of overweight people in the whole period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You provide an overview that identifies the broad rise in rates and correctly notes that the USA finishes highest while Korea remains lowest. Your final-period comparisons are also mostly grounded in the graph: the USA is about 74%, England and Australia are in the 60s, and Korea is around 35%. However, the overview overgeneralises because not every country rises steadily throughout; for example, the USA dips slightly before increasing, and several series fluctuate. Some earlier details are inaccurate or unclear: Austria did not join the USA in 1980, as its data begin in the 1980s, and the 1990 figures for England and Spain are not both around the values stated. Select the main trends more accurately and support them with clearer comparisons across the period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs organised around earlier and later years. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information, and time markers such as “In 1990” and “In 2020” help signal the sequence. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical and the comparisons within paragraphs are not always easy to follow. The sentence beginning “Also in 2000” groups several countries without explaining how their figures compare, while the final sentence strings together several rates using repeated “and” and “for.” Use clearer grouping—for example, highest, middle, and lowest rates—and connect comparisons with precise referencing rather than relying mainly on year-by-year listing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a graph, including “rates,” “percentage,” “accounted for,” and “figures,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task. “Unhealthy people” and “obese population” do not precisely describe the graph’s measure, which is the proportion of people who are overweight. Phrases such as “recorded with minor numbers” and “fall in between 60 to 70 percent” are also awkward. Spelling errors, including “porportions,” “begining,” and “Intially,” further reduce control. Prefer precise terms such as “overweight rate” and “proportion,” and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and more complex forms, including the contrast introduced by “Whereas” and the time clauses beginning “In 1990” and “In 2020.” Most of the intended meaning can be followed, but some errors in sentence structure, tense, and agreement remain. For example, “USA was the only country who has percentage” has an unsuitable relative pronoun and inconsistent tense, while “Austria joined USA and show figure” lacks correct verb forms and articles. The final sentence is also difficult to control because several comparisons are joined into one structure. Practise forming complete comparison sentences with consistent past or projected-future tense, and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation.
