Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The Line graph illustrate the overweight rates of past, present and future estimation of nine particular countries like USA, England, Austria, Spain, Canada, Italy, Australia, France and Korea.

Overall, each countries had rise in overweight ratio but USA, England and Australia had significant increase in proportion whereas Korea is the country having the least number of overweights.

Turning to the details, USA had the incerasing number of overweights less than 50% in 1972 to almost 85% in 2020. Similarly Australia and England both had significant surge crossing 60% marks. Whereas, other nations like Canada, Austria, France and Italy had fluctuating graphs but kept increasing but not exceeding 55% mark from the date 1983 upto 2020.

At last korea is the only nation having the least number of overweights starting from 25% in 1997 to reaching 36% in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the overall upward pattern and correctly note that Korea remains the lowest, which gives the response a relevant overview. However, the report addresses the data only partially: the USA is said to rise to “almost 85%” in 2020, whereas the graph shows about 74%, and the claim that Canada, Austria, France and Italy do not exceed 55% overlooks Australia and England and does not clearly distinguish the countries’ different endpoints. The USA, England and Australia are reasonable choices for notable increases, but their trends need accurate figures and clearer comparisons. The response is also below the required 150 words, limiting the detail available. Add a fuller, accurate comparison of the highest and lowest rates and the other countries’ trajectories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. Sequencing phrases such as “Overall,” “Turning to the details,” and “At last” help signal movement through the report, and the main points are generally easy to follow. However, the final paragraph’s “At last” sounds more like a sequence of events than a concluding comparison, and “Whereas” begins a fragment rather than linking a complete contrast. The grouping in the third paragraph is also difficult to follow because several countries are combined without explaining their different patterns. Organise the details into clearer groups—for example, the highest-rising countries and the lower-rate countries—and use linking words to show precise comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt some suitable trend vocabulary, including “significant increase,” “surge,” “fluctuating,” and “proportion,” and the topic is usually understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “overweight rates of past, present and future estimation,” “number of overweights,” and “least number of overweights.” These expressions make the description less clear and less appropriate for a statistical report. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “incerasing” and “korea.” Use standard terms such as “the proportion of people who were overweight” and “rate,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary for rises, plateaus and fluctuations would help you describe the countries without relying on broad phrases such as “significant surge.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and some more complex structures, including the contrast introduced by “whereas” and the participle phrase “starting from 25%.” The overall meaning can usually be understood, but errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction remain noticeable. For example, “The Line graph illustrate” needs a singular verb, while “each countries had rise” has problems with both number agreement and verb form. “USA had the incerasing number … less than 50% in 1972 to …” also lacks a clear grammatical structure for describing a change. The sentence beginning “Whereas” is incomplete. Practise accurate patterns such as “The rate in the USA rose from … to …” and check subject–verb agreement and complete sentence boundaries.
