Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates past, current and future projected overweight rates in nine countries between year 1970 and 2020.

Overall, the project of overweight increased in most of the countries. The USA had the heighest rate and is projected to the top by 2020. In cotrast, Korea recorded lowest rate. Most of the countries are expected to further increases in overweight rates.

Firstly at the USA, the figure stood at the 45 percent in 1970 before slightly fall of 42% in 1978. then it suddenly rose steadily, reaching 75% by 2020. England also experinced contineous increase from 45% to 69% by 2020. Canada's rate fluctuated but increased approximately 55% by 2020. Spain and Australia showed more moderate growth. Meanwhile, Austria's figure remained stable, although some fluctuations occured.

France and Italy recorded lower rate, around 45% at the end. Finally, Korea had the lowest proportion, increasing from 25% in 1070 to 35% by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide a relevant overview: most rates rise, the USA is highest by the end, and Korea remains lowest. Several comparisons are supported by the chart, including England reaching about 69% and Canada ending near 55%. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the USA begins around 45% in 1972 and dips to about 43% in 1980, rather than 42% in 1978; Korea’s series begins in 1998, not 1070. The claim that Austria remained stable overlooks its overall rise from about 39% to 46.5%, and France and Italy do not both finish at around 45% (France is about 44%, Italy about 45.5%). More precise coverage of these trends would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to selected country details. The overview helps the reader identify the main pattern, and sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Meanwhile,” and “Finally” make the progression easy to follow. However, the country groupings are somewhat mechanical, and the final paragraph combines France, Italy, and Korea without explaining how their trends compare. Some links between ideas are also abrupt, such as the shift from the USA to England and Canada. Grouping countries by their final rates or by the scale of their increases, then using clearer comparisons within each paragraph, would create smoother progression and more effective cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “rate,” “fluctuated,” “proportion,” “projected,” and “moderate growth.” These terms help communicate the main trends, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several spelling errors, including “heighest,” “cotrast,” “experinced,” “contineous,” and “occured.” Some word choices or combinations are also inaccurate: “the project of overweight” is not a natural way to describe a trend, and “projected to the top” is imprecise. Aim for accurate collocations such as “overweight rates increased” and “is projected to reach the highest level.” Proofreading spelling and choosing more precise trend language would strengthen this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, for example, “The USA had the highest rate and is projected to the top by 2020” and “Austria’s figure remained stable, although some fluctuations occurred.” Most sentences communicate their basic meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “before slightly fall,” the verb form should be “before falling,” while “Most of the countries are expected to further increases” needs “are expected to increase further.” The opening also needs an article and a more natural time expression: “between 1970 and 2020.” Capitalisation after “then” and punctuation around introductory phrases need attention. More consistent control of verb forms and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy.
