Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph displays previous and present years overweight rates and projected future overweight rate in nine chosen countries.
Overall, the proportion overweight across all countries over the years between 1970 and 2020 suggests an increase in proportion overweight, with USA showing the highest percentage and Korea the least among all.
The USA and England shows dramatic increase where the USA reaches above 70% and England approximately 70% in the year 2020. Moreover, Canada and Spain move up steadily from around 1990 increasing from a percentage of 40% and 50% to touching a percentage between 50% and 60% over the period.
From 1980 and 1990, the proportion overweight in Austria and Australia depicts gradual increase, moving from around 40% to reaching around 50%. France is also seen rising and reaching around 45%. Furthermore, Italy and Korea is seen escalating to reach around 35% and 45% since around 2000 to 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You provide a relevant overview, identifying the broad upward trend and correctly noting that the USA is highest and Korea lowest. You also report the USA and England reaching roughly 70% by 2020, and describe increases in several other countries. However, some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: Canada begins near 50%, not 40%, while Spain starts in the low 40s, not 50%; the wording reverses these starting points. Italy ends at about 45%, whereas Korea is around 35%, not the other way round. The claim that Austria and Australia rise from around 40% to 50% also overlooks Australia’s lower starting point and stronger increase. Select a few key trends and support them with accurate start and end figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping countries. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships. However, the grouping does not always create a clear progression, and several comparisons are compressed into long sentences, making the data harder to follow. For example, the sentence about Canada and Spain combines two different starting levels without clearly assigning each figure. The final paragraph also moves from Austria and Australia to France, then Italy and Korea without a consistent comparison principle. Organise the body around clear groups, such as highest, middle, and lowest rates, and use precise references to connect each figure to its country.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “steadily,” “gradual increase,” and “reaching,” so the main trends are generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are awkward or repetitive. “Previous and present years overweight rates” is not a natural description of the time periods, and “move up steadily” and “seen escalating” are less precise than standard graph language. “Touching a percentage” is also an unsuitable collocation for a rate. Use conventional terms such as “the proportion of people who were overweight,” “rose,” “increased,” and “stood at.” Greater precision in describing rises, fluctuations, and final levels would make the account more natural and informative.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in agreement and sentence construction recur. In “The USA and England shows,” the plural subject requires “show”; similarly, “Italy and Korea is seen” should use a plural verb or be recast. The phrase “from 1980 and 1990” uses an incorrect preposition, and “in the year 2020” is awkwardly placed in the sentence about England and the USA. Some sentences also lack clear grammatical links between the countries and their figures. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, prepositions, and sentence boundaries, then use shorter, controlled comparisons alongside complex structures.
