Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You identify the countries and make a basic attempt to describe the ranges and time periods shown, so the response is related to the graph. However, it does not summarise the main trends or provide a clear overview: for example, it does not report that the USA rises to the highest projected rate, while Korea remains the lowest. Some details are inaccurate or unclear, such as saying Canada is “on the 50 percentage” and placing the USA, England and Spain together at 40–50%, despite the USA reaching about 74%. The response also contains only 119 words, below the required 150. To improve, give an overview of the highest and lowest rates and describe key increases with accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.0
The response follows a loose sequence, beginning with the countries, then giving broad percentage ranges and finally mentioning when several series start. This shows an attempt to group information. However, it is presented as one long, largely unpunctuated passage, so the reader cannot easily distinguish an introduction, overview and supporting details. Connections between ideas are also unclear; for instance, “these are OECD countries names therefore Canada on the 50 percentage” does not explain how the country list leads to the figure. Organise the answer into short paragraphs and use clear links such as “Overall,” “By contrast,” and “From 1990 onwards” to show relationships between trends.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing the chart, including “overweight rates,” “percentage,” “start” and “between,” and the country names make the subject clear. However, the range is basic and repetitive, with “percentage” and “start” used repeatedly rather than precise language for trends. Several phrases are awkward or unclear, such as “on the 50 percentage” and “this all overweight percentage given in line graph.” Spelling and word-form choices, including “Asteria” for Austria, also reduce precision. Build a small set of accurate chart terms and collocations, such as “stood at,” “increased to,” “remained the lowest,” and “accounted for approximately,” and check country names carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
There are attempts to express time periods and comparisons, but most of the response consists of loosely connected fragments rather than controlled sentences. Errors in sentence structure and agreement are frequent, as in “the nine selected countries is that USA” and “it going to 2020.” Articles and prepositions are also often missing or incorrectly used, for example “on the 50 percentage” and “start from 1980 to 2020.” Punctuation is largely absent, making sentence boundaries difficult to identify. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “The USA’s rate rose from about 45% in 1972 to a projected 74% in 2020,” and use full stops to separate each comparison.
