Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates past and projected future proprtions of overweight individuals across nine selected OECD countries between 1970 to 2020.

Overall, it is clear that overweight rates increased in all nine nations over the period. The USA experienced the highest rates overall in the timeline and Korea was the one with the least experienced percentage.

Looking closely at the higher upward trend, USA started at 45% in 1970 and constantly went upwards till almost 80% till 2020. England, Canada and Spain followed a similar upward trend where they started at 44%, 46% and 49% between 1985 to 1995 and also went upwards till Canada and Spain got almost similar rates by the end of time at 55% each but England went up high at almost 70%.

Austria, Italy and France was at almost 40%, 37% and 30% at an initial illustrations in 1980, 1995 and 1990 respectively, kept increasing but not much and got similar rates at the end of the period about 45% each. Austalia was at 35% in around 1990 and went high in a short period of time upto 65% till 2020. Now, at last following the lower upward trend, Korea was at only 25% and had an increment of just 10% till 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide a relevant overview, identifying the broad rise across the countries, the USA as the highest and Korea as the lowest. You also include useful comparisons, such as England ending near 70% while Canada and Spain finish around 55%. However, some details are inaccurate or imprecise: the USA begins around 45% in 1972, not 1970, and ends near 74%, rather than almost 80%. The stated starting figures for England, Canada and Spain are also mixed up: their chart values are approximately 47%, 50% and 43%, respectively. The claim that Austria, Italy and France all finish at about 45% overlooks their different endpoints. More precise selection and reporting of key figures would make the account more complete and reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs grouping countries by their rates or trends. This makes the main comparisons reasonably easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking closely,” and “Now, at last” signal movement through the description, although some sound mechanical or do not clearly express the relationship between the data. The final paragraph also combines several countries and trends, so the reader has to work to distinguish their individual figures. Improve progression by grouping countries more consistently—for example, the highest-rate countries together and the lower-rate countries together—and use clearer references and transitions. This would make the organisation more controlled without changing the relevant content.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a suitable range of trend vocabulary, including “increased,” “upward trend,” “similar rates,” and “increment,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing a graph: “the one with the least experienced percentage,” “went upwards,” and “went up high” do not sound idiomatic. “Kept increasing but not much” is also vague, while “initial illustrations” does not clearly mean starting values. There are spelling errors in “proprtions” and “Austalia,” and “overweight rates” or “proportions” would be more precise than “percentage” in some contexts. Aim for accurate collocations and a concise, formal style, using verbs such as “rose,” “climbed,” and “levelled off” where the data support them.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the overview and comparisons joined with “where” and “but.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce accuracy. For example, “between 1970 to 2020” uses an incorrect preposition pattern; write “from 1970 to 2020” or “between 1970 and 2020.” In “Austria, Italy and France was,” the plural subject requires “were.” The phrase “at an initial illustrations” has an article–number mismatch, and “till almost 80% till 2020” repeats the time marker awkwardly. Check subject–verb agreement, articles and plural forms, and build comparisons in complete, clearly controlled clauses. These corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at varied sentence structures.
