Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You identify the chart’s subject and attempt an overview, noting that the USA rises after an initial decline and that Korea has the lowest rates. These are relevant observations, but the overview is difficult to interpret: “all of them USA is the following upward trend from 1997 to 2000” does not accurately summarise the countries’ overall patterns. The response also gives very little reliable comparison across the nine countries. The USA’s decline from 1972 to 1980 and subsequent rise to about 74% by 2020 are broadly represented, but Australia’s start is misplaced (“nearly 1980 to 1990”), and Korea’s projected figure is given as 35–38 rather than about 35%. The response is 16 words below the required minimum. Add a clear overview and accurate comparisons of the highest, lowest and other notable trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening, an overview, and further comments on the USA, Australia and Korea. Connectors such as “Overall,” “On other hand” and “Second” show an effort to guide the reader. However, progression is hard to follow because the overview contains unclear statements, and the later details do not form a consistent comparison of the countries. For example, “many of the countries come after the USA comes in the firstly” is difficult to understand, while the final paragraph repeats the point about Korea without clearly linking it to the earlier overview. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and key comparisons, and make each paragraph develop one clear point with accurate references.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “line chart,” “rates,” “upward,” “downward” and “gradually,” so the reader can recognise the intended topic and trends. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear. Phrases such as “comes after the USA comes in the firstly” and “follow the forward pattern” are not natural ways to describe rankings or increases. There are also spelling errors, including “downwatrd,” “thw,” “teh” and “slowoly.” Aim for precise trend language and check spelling carefully. Terms such as “rose,” “declined,” “remained the lowest” and “reached approximately” would help describe the data more clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt a few longer structures, including “it has been seen that the USA rates moved…” and “Korea is the country which…,” as well as simpler statements. However, sentence construction and control of verb forms are inconsistent, and several sentences are difficult to understand. For example, “all of them USA is the following upward trend” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “Korea … are the lowest overweight” has an agreement problem and an incomplete comparison. Missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent capitalisation also affect readability. Practise building clear subject–verb sentences, such as “The USA’s rate fell between 1972 and 1980, then rose steadily,” and use accurate past and future forms when describing the chart.
