Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 2.5
The response identifies the graph’s subject and attempts an overview, but it does not adequately summarise the main features or make meaningful comparisons. The claim that Korea shows “steady growth” is broadly supported, yet saying this “corresponds with high figure in the table for usa” is unclear and does not explain the countries’ contrasting levels: the USA is highest, while Korea remains lowest. No other countries, changes, or approximate figures are reported. The response is also far below the required 150 words, leaving the task substantially incomplete. To improve, provide a clear overview of the overall upward pattern and the highest and lowest countries, then select several key trends and comparisons to support it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence introduces the graph, followed by a separate overview beginning “Overall”. This gives the reader a minimal sense of sequence. However, the response ends after these two sentences, so there is no developed progression through the data and no paragraphing to distinguish an overview from supporting details. The link between Korea’s growth and the USA’s high figure is also difficult to follow, and the comma after “Overall” lacks a following space. Build a fuller structure with an introduction, an overview, and one or two paragraphs grouping countries by their rates or trends; use clear comparisons to connect the information.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a small amount of relevant topic vocabulary, including “line graph”, “rates”, “steady growth” and “high figure”, so its general subject is recognisable. However, the range is very limited, and several choices are inaccurate or unclear: “outweigh rates” does not express the intended measure, and “table” misidentifies the visual as a graph. The spelling errors in “coresponds” and “woth” also weaken control. Use precise terms such as “proportion of people who were overweight”, “rose”, “remained”, and “projected”, and vary language for comparisons. Accurate spelling and appropriate collocations would make the description clearer and more suitable for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response contains two short sentences, and the basic sentence pattern is generally understandable. However, the range is very narrow, with no developed complex structures or sentences describing changes over time. In the opening, “between the nine selected countries between 1970 and 2020” repeats the same preposition and makes the relationship awkward. The overview’s construction, “the steady growth in Korea which corresponds with high figure”, is incomplete or unclear in how the ideas connect, and “high figure” lacks an article. The comma after “Overall” also needs a space. Practise combining accurate clauses to describe trends and comparisons, for example, stating that rates rose in most countries while the USA remained highest.
