Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph presents rate of obesity in nine different countries. It displays what portion of their population was overweight in past, future and now.

Overall, It can be seen that Korea has lowest number of overweight all times whereas USA has highest number of proportion of overweight.

It can be observed that France, Italy, Austria started nearly from 35% and after some fluctuations they all stopped at almost same point which is close to 45%. Overall, it is seen that they all rose by almost 10% approximately. Australia also started from the same point as these countries started but the growth for Australia was sharp, and ended up at around 65% in 2020.

In first half Spain rose little, then decreased a little and after rising again it ended with 55% nearly same as Canada in 2020. For England and USA the growth rate was pretty similar. The growth was dramatic. Korea was always in the bottom at any time during the whole half century period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the graph’s broad message: the USA is highest and Korea lowest, and most countries rise over time. You also make relevant comparisons, such as Australia’s stronger increase and Spain and Canada ending at similar levels. However, some details are inaccurate or too general. France, Italy and Austria do not all start near 35%: Austria begins around 39%, while France starts near 31%; nor do they finish at almost the same point, as France is about 44% and Austria and Italy about 46%. The claim that the USA and England had similar growth is not well supported, since their starting points and trajectories differ. Develop the overview with clearer comparisons of the highest and lowest rates and the overall upward trend, and report key figures more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs grouping countries with broadly similar patterns. This makes the main information reasonably easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In first half,” and “For England and USA” help signal shifts between points. However, the progression within the country comparisons is sometimes unclear: “they all stopped at almost same point” is vague, and “Korea was always in the bottom at any time during the whole half century period” repeats the overview rather than adding a distinct detail. Some references, including “these countries” and “they all,” require the reader to infer exactly which series are meant. Group countries more consistently and use precise references to make comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main trends, including “proportion,” “fluctuations,” “growth,” and “decreased.” There are also attempts to vary descriptions, such as “rose,” “ended,” and “started.” However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive. “Rate of obesity” does not match the graph’s measure as precisely as “overweight rate,” while “stopped at” is not a natural way to describe a final figure. “Growth was dramatic” is vague and overstates the comparison without specifying the change. The repeated use of “started,” “growth,” and “overall” also limits flexibility. Choose more exact trend language, such as “rose steadily,” “levelled off,” or “finished at,” and use “percentage” or “proportion” consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses linked with “whereas,” “but,” and “after,” and the main trends remain understandable. Some grammatical errors are present, however. In “It displays what portion of their population was overweight in past, future and now,” the time expressions need articles or clearer phrasing, and the tense sequence is awkward. “Korea has lowest number” is missing an article, while “For England and USA” also needs articles. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “Overall, It,” and several sentences use comma-linked clauses where clearer punctuation would help. Work on articles, consistent tense, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex comparisons.
