Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph below illustrates overweight rates in nine countries it shows overweight rates of these 9 countries from 1970 to 2020.
In this line graph USA is the country where overweight rates tend to be the highest and growing over time while Koreans have the lowest overweight rates, england is second after usa and australia is third, the remaining countries tend to be in middle of the graph.
The line graph starts from 1970 with usa starting at about 45% proportion weight and jumping to 75% in 2020, followed by england in 1990 starting relatively similar to usa and rose to 70% in 2020 while australia started at about 32% in 1990 and reached 65% in 2020. Spain and Canada have remained steady with the overweight rates rising only 10 and 15 percent throughout the years, while Austria and Italy starting close at 40% and finishing at 45%, France starting at 30% rose to 45% and Korea being the country with the lowest overweight proportions in the line graph, the data given in the graph starts at year 2000 just above 20% and finishing a little above 30%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad pattern that the USA has the highest rates and Korea the lowest, and you include several country comparisons. However, the overview is not sufficiently precise: saying the remaining countries are “in middle of the graph” does not summarise their main trends or final ranking. Some details are inaccurate or too vague. For example, the USA reaches about 74%, not 75% (a minor approximation), but Australia finishes at about 64%, rather than 65%, and France rises to about 44%, not 45%. More importantly, Spain and Canada are not simply “steady”: both rise overall, and Austria and Italy do not both start close to 40% in the periods shown. Select the clearest overall patterns and report them accurately, with a few well-chosen comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic sequence: an introduction, a general statement about the countries, and a longer paragraph describing figures. This gives the reader some organisation, and words such as “while” and “followed by” help signal comparisons. However, progression is limited because the overview and details are not clearly separated, and the final paragraph strings many countries together in one sentence. The opening also repeats “overweight rates” and “these 9 countries” without adding information. Grouping countries by high, middle and low rates, then using separate sentences for the main trends, would make the comparisons easier to follow. Use linking expressions selectively and ensure each sentence has one clear focus.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “rates,” “rising,” “remained steady” and “lowest,” so the main subject is generally clear. There is some variation in how you describe change, but the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or repetitive. For instance, “jumping to 75%” is less suitable for a gradual rise across decades, while “the remaining countries tend to be in middle of the graph” is vague. “Proportion weight” is also an awkward expression for this context. Aim for precise trend language such as “increased steadily,” “rose overall” and “ended at,” and vary repeated references to rates. More accurate collocations would make the report sound clearer and more formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt longer sentences with comparisons, for example, “USA is the country where overweight rates tend to be the highest … while Koreans have the lowest,” but control is inconsistent. The opening sentence joins two independent clauses with no punctuation, and the final paragraph becomes a long run-on sentence containing several country descriptions. There are also recurring issues with articles and sentence structure, as in “in middle of the graph,” and with parallel verb forms in “Spain and Canada have remained steady … while Austria and Italy starting close at 40%.” Capitalisation of country names is inconsistent, including “england” and “usa.” Use shorter, complete sentences and check that each clause has a clear subject and finite verb; this will help make the comparisons easier to understand.
