Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrate the overweight rates in nine countries between 1970 and 2020

Overall, United states of America was the only country with available data in 1970s which is 45% overweight proportion. Also, USA has the highest overweight rate of 75% in 2020. Korea is the country with least overweight proportion

In 1970s, USA was the only country having data availability on overweight rates. In 1980s, several other countries had the data availability. These countries are Austria, Spain, England, France, Australia, etc. After a decline in 1778 with 42 %, USA had a steady growth with approximately 9% in each decade, reaching 75% in 2020

The countries with data availability starts in 1980s and 1990s, Austria, Spain, Italy and France each had a minimal growth. In 1980s and 1990s, Australia is the country which faced a fast paced growth from 32% in 1986 to 64% in 2020, along with England having growth 22% between 1990 and 2020

Korea is the country with least overweight percentage starting with 25% in 1998 and ends with just a growth of 10% in 22 years

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant overall features, including the USA’s high rate, Korea’s low rate, and the general upward movement in many countries. However, the response only partially reports the graph’s main features, and some details are inaccurate: the USA’s decline is around 1980, not “1778,” and its rate rises from about 43% to 74%, rather than increasing by approximately 9% in each decade. Australia begins at about 34% in 1990, not 32% in 1986. The claim that Austria, Spain, England, France and Australia all had data in the 1980s is also incorrect; most begin in the 1990s. Develop a clearer overview and compare the countries’ end-point rates, while selecting accurate examples to support it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an overview to descriptions of the USA, other countries and Korea. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the USA being the only country with data in the 1970s is stated twice, and the final paragraph repeats that Korea has the lowest rate. Connections between ideas are sometimes unclear, particularly “The countries with data availability starts in 1980s and 1990s,” which does not clearly introduce the comparisons that follow. Group countries by their starting levels or overall trends, and use clearer linking and referencing so each paragraph adds a distinct feature rather than restating earlier information.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary such as “overweight rates,” “proportion,” “decline,” and “growth,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons you intend to make. However, several phrases are awkward or imprecise, including “data availability,” “minimal growth,” and “fast paced growth.” Repeating “growth” also limits the range of language used to describe trends. There is a spelling error in “1778,” and “least overweight proportion” is less natural than a direct comparison of rates. Aim for precise trend language and natural collocations, such as describing a rate as rising steadily, remaining relatively stable, or ending at the lowest level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, and some are understandable, such as “Korea is the country with least overweight percentage starting with 25% in 1998.” However, errors in agreement and sentence construction occur regularly: “The line graph illustrate” should use a singular verb, while “The countries … starts” has a plural subject and verb mismatch. Articles are also missing in phrases such as “with least overweight percentage,” and the sentence beginning “The countries with data availability starts…” is difficult to follow grammatically. Use a wider range of controlled sentence patterns, checking subject–verb agreement and articles, and separate complex comparisons into clear clauses.
