Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given line grap illustrates the trends of former and future rates of high body weight percentage for nine different countires in between years 1970 and 2020.
Overall, increasing trend is shown by the graph for all selected countries. Significant proportion of overweight has raised in all these years in USA, while Korea is with the least change in proportion of obese people.
Firstly, in early 1970 46% USA citizens were overweight which increased to 74% of obese people in 2020. In 50 years it is 28% of growth in overweight people. Meanwhile, Korea is least affected by obesity. In late 1990s, 25% people were overweight which then raise to 35% in 2020. Although, England and Australia showed almost similar trends; In 1990 the rates were 47% and 34% respectively, which then rose to 69% and 63% untill 2020.
However, in Canada percentage of overweight decline from 50% to 48% in mid 1900s to 2000 then steadily rose to 55% in 2020. Meanwhile, Italy and Austria ended up with the same proportion of overweight citizens with 45% in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You provide a relevant overview by identifying the broad rise across the countries and noting that the USA had the largest increase while Korea changed least. Several comparisons are also supported by the graph, including the USA’s rise to about 74% and Korea’s increase from roughly 25% to 35%. However, coverage is uneven: the overview does not identify the USA as having the highest final rate, and the response omits notable patterns for Spain, France and Italy. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: Australia reaches about 64%, not 63%, and Italy and Austria finish at different levels, around 45.5% and 46.5% respectively. Develop the overview around the highest and lowest endpoints, and check comparisons against the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs. The sequence from the USA and Korea to England and Australia, then Canada and the European countries, gives the reader a workable structure. Linking expressions such as “Meanwhile” and “However” help signal comparisons, although “However” does not clearly express a contrast with the preceding paragraph, and “Meanwhile” is repeated. Some information is compressed into long sentences, making the comparisons less precise—for example, the sentence about England and Australia combines starting and ending rates without clearly stating the final year. Use paragraphing to group countries by meaningful patterns and make each comparison explicit; this would improve progression and reduce mechanical linking.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “trends,” “proportion,” “decline,” “steadily rose” and “increased.” These choices generally make the data understandable, and you attempt to vary expressions for overweight rates. However, some wording is imprecise or unnatural: “high body weight percentage” and “least affected by obesity” do not describe the chart as directly as “overweight rate” and “had the lowest rate.” There are also spelling errors, such as “grap,” “countires” and “untill,” and “growth” is less suitable than “increase” for a percentage-point change. Aim for consistent, accurate chart vocabulary and proofread spelling; this will make your comparisons more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which” and “while,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors nevertheless reduce accuracy. For example, “Overall, increasing trend is shown” needs an article, while “which then raise to 35%” has an incorrect verb form and should be “which then rose.” The sentence beginning “Although, England and Australia…” is not correctly punctuated: “Although” should introduce a dependent clause, or the sentence can begin “England and Australia showed…”. There are also tense and sentence-boundary issues in “In 50 years it is 28% of growth.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete clause structures while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
