Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given line graph illustrate information about past and projected future overweight percentage in selected OECD countries. Overall, it clear that Australia showed a significant upward trend over the period, while others experienced upward trend. Additionally the USA remained the highest throughout the period.
Looking at the details, in Korea, the figure is 25 to 35 percentage, which was lower then any others nation. Austria, Italy and France started between 30 percentage and 40 percentage moreover, end at the same point in 2020. The rate of overweight Australia went up sharply reaching a peak of 65 percentage in 2020. In contrast, the USA and England saw a gradual increase ending at 70 percentage and 75 percentage by 2020.
Moving on the remaining countries, Canada and Spain started at 45 percentage and 50 percentage. Although they experienced some fluctuations, they eventually climbed to 55 percentage by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You provide an overview and identify the broad upward movement, correctly noting that the USA finishes highest and Korea remains lowest. However, several comparisons are inaccurate or too general. Australia ends at about 64%, not 65% as a peak, and the USA and England finish at roughly 74% and 69%, respectively, rather than 75% and 70%. Canada and Spain do not both finish at 55%: Canada is about 55%, while Spain is closer to 55% but slightly lower. The claim that Austria, Italy and France end at the same point is incorrect; their final rates differ substantially, at around 46%, 45.5% and 44%. More precise selection and reporting of key differences would make the summary more complete and reliable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by two detail paragraphs, and phrases such as “Looking at the details” and “Moving on” signal transitions. The main comparisons are generally grouped sensibly, so the reader can follow the discussion. However, some links between ideas are awkward or unclear. For example, “Austria, Italy and France started between 30 percentage and 40 percentage moreover, end at the same point” joins contrasting information without effective punctuation or a clear relationship. The final paragraph also groups Canada and Spain together despite their different starting points and trends. Use more precise linking and organise comparisons around genuinely similar patterns to improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “upward trend,” “fluctuations,” “gradual increase” and “climbed,” which helps communicate the main patterns. There is some repetition of “percentage” and “trend,” however, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “the figure is 25 to 35 percentage,” “lower then any others nation,” and “reaching a peak” do not express the data naturally or precisely. “Peak” is especially unsuitable because the graph shows a continuing rise to the final year. Aim for more accurate chart language and vary expressions for rates and changes. These improvements would make the description clearer and more natural while retaining its relevant vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “Although they experienced some fluctuations” and a comparison introduced by “In contrast.” Meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening says “The given line graph illustrate” and “Overall, it clear,” where subject–verb agreement and the verb “be” are missing. Other examples include “lower then any others nation,” “the rate … went up … reaching,” and “Moving on the remaining countries,” which show problems with comparison forms, sentence construction and punctuation. Check agreement, articles, plurals and sentence boundaries, and revise complex sentences carefully. More consistently accurate structures would strengthen the response.
