Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph compares the past and projected future overweight rates in nine selected OECD countries from 1970 to 2020.
Overall, the highest proportion of overweights contributed by USA while other countries grew steadily. However, USA gathered that data from 1970 and significantly faced higher overweight rates.
In 1970, 47% of USA population were overweight and reached to 74% by 2020. However, in Austria,1980, 39% were overweight and it stood at 47% by 2020.
Meanwhile, majority of the countries started to gather that data from 1990. The Australia and the France stood at 32% and 30% in 1990 and reached to 60% and 43%.
In 1998, Korea stood at 23% and accounted or 33% in 2020. Furthermore, in 1995, Canada represented 50% were overweight and remained in range below to 60% by 2020. England represented 47% in 1990 and increased to 70% over next two decade. Meanwhile, Spain and Italy remained in range below to 60% and 50% by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the graph’s subject and give an overview that the USA had the highest rate and that rates generally increased. You also include several country comparisons, such as the USA rising to 74% and Korea remaining comparatively low. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: the USA did not provide data from 1970, and the graph shows its first figure in 1972. Several reported figures or dates do not match the chart, including Austria at 47% in 2020 (about 46.5% in 2019), Australia at 60% (about 64% in 2020), and England at 70% (about 69% in 2019). The final comparisons for Spain and Italy are too general. Select the main patterns and report them more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs of country details. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between points. However, the progression is not consistently clear. The overview repeats the idea of the USA’s high rate, while the body moves between countries and years without a clear grouping, making comparisons difficult to follow. Some transitions also suggest contrast where the relationship is not clear, as in “However” before the USA’s increase. Group countries by a meaningful feature—for example, highest, middle, and lowest rates—and use references such as “this figure” or “by the end of the period” to connect details more smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “proportion,” “increased,” “reached,” and “remained.” This gives you a basic range for reporting trends and comparisons. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. For example, “proportion of overweights contributed by USA” does not naturally describe a rate, and “gathered that data” is not an appropriate way to describe when figures begin. Phrases such as “accounted or 33%” and “remained in range below to 60%” also need more precise wording. Build a reliable set of expressions for rates, such as “the proportion of people who were overweight,” “stood at,” and “remained below.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “as,” and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, errors are frequent, and some sentence patterns are faulty. For example, “47% of USA population were overweight” has problems with the article and possessive structure, while “reached to 74%” uses an incorrect verb pattern. In “Canada represented 50% were overweight,” the clauses are not joined grammatically. There are also inconsistent or unclear tense forms and punctuation, as in “Austria,1980.” Practise accurate patterns such as “The rate in the USA rose from X to Y” and “In Canada, the figure stood at X,” then check articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries.
