Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph below represent overweight rates of past and current, as well as the overweight rate projected in the future in nine different countries between the year 1970 to 2020.

Firstly, if we look at USA it has been increasing, as at the year 1970 it was below 50% but the future overweight rate shows by the year 2020 it has increas to over 70%. Moving on to Korea the overweight rate is the lowest comparing to other countores. At the year between 1990 and 2020 overweight rate was over 20% then it increase to over 30% by the year 2020.

Secoundly, for Italy between 1990 and 2020 overweight rate was had a slit increas between 30 and 40% to a letter under 40%. However, till the year 2010 the overweight rate remain the same then it rose in between 40 and 50%.

Lastly, in Austria it was mostly the same untill the year 2000 then there was a slit increas in between 40 and 50%, However, then there was a fall and the overweight rate was a bit over 40%. Furthermore, there was a slit rise again.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify several relevant patterns, including the USA’s rise to above 70% by 2020 and Korea’s position as the lowest-rate country. However, the response covers only four of the nine countries and gives no clear overall summary of the main picture, such as the generally upward trend or the contrast between the USA and Korea. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: Italy did not remain stable until 2010; its rate was around 39% from 2000 to 2009 before rising to about 45% by 2014. Austria’s final rate was about 46.5%, but this endpoint is not reported. To improve, select the most important comparisons across the graph and describe the key changes accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is divided into paragraphs and uses signposts such as “Firstly,” “Moving on,” “Secoundly,” and “Lastly,” so the reader can see that you are discussing different countries. However, the sequence does not build a clear overview, and the country-by-country points feel disconnected rather than organised around the graph’s main comparisons. Some linking is also awkward: “Furthermore” introduces another rise without clearly stating when it occurred, while “However” is used where the relationship between ideas is not fully explained. A clearer structure would begin with an overview, then group the highest and lowest rates or compare countries with similar trends. Use transitions to show precise relationships between changes.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “overweight rate,” “increasing,” “fall,” and “rise,” and the main subject remains understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “a slit increas,” “a letter under 40%,” and “the lowest comparing to other countores.” Spelling errors, including “Secoundly,” “untill,” and “increas,” are noticeable and reduce the clarity and control expected for this criterion. Try using a more varied set of precise trend expressions and check spelling carefully. For example, describe a rate as “remained stable” or “rose slightly,” and use “compared with” when making a comparison.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, for example, “Moving on to Korea…” and “However, till the year 2010…,” but the range is limited and errors occur frequently. Subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “The line graph below represent,” and verb forms are faulty in “it has increas” and “the overweight rate was had.” There are also problems with articles, prepositions, and sentence construction, as in “between the year 1970 to 2020” and “At the year between 1990 and 2020.” These errors sometimes make the timeline or meaning difficult to follow. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and use straightforward sentence patterns before adding more complex clauses.
