Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

the given graph shows past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries from 1970 to 2020.

The most grown OECD country is USA which started from 45% and had a dip in 1980 then rise staidly and reached 75% in 2020. The second most grown country is Australia it started in 1990 from 34% and reached 65% in 2020. The third most grown country is England it started in early 1990s and reached 68% in 2020.

other OECD countries are Canada, Spain, Austria, France, Korea. Canada started in mid-1990s with 50% and reached 55% in 2020. Spain started in late-1980s with 43% and reached 55% in 2020. Italy and France started from different stats, Italy with 38% and France with 30% but they ended up with same stats at 45% in 2020. Korea started at 25% in late-1990s and reached 35% in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad pattern that the USA had the highest rate and Korea the lowest, and you include several start and end figures. However, the response is only 148 words, below the required minimum, and coverage is incomplete: Austria is named but its trend is not reported, while the overview does not summarise the general upward movement across most countries. Some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. For example, Italy and France did not finish at the same rate: their 2019 values were about 45.5% and 44%, respectively. The USA reached about 74%, rather than 75%, and Australia about 64%, rather than 65% (small differences are acceptable). Develop a clearer overview and report the main trends more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, understandable order: it first describes the three countries with the largest increases, then gives figures for several others, and ends with an overall statement. This grouping helps the reader follow the information. However, progression is limited because the final overview largely repeats the opening comparison rather than drawing together the main pattern. The phrase “other OECD countries” is also followed by a list that omits Italy until the next sentence, which makes the grouping less clear. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and key comparisons, and connect related countries more explicitly. This would make the organisation more coherent and reduce the list-like effect.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a graph, including “started,” “reached,” “dip,” and “overall,” so the main information is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or unnatural for an academic report. “Most grown” is not an appropriate way to describe the largest increase, and “stats” is too informal and vague when referring to rates. “Rise staidly” appears to be an inaccurate word choice and does not clearly describe the trend. Aim for precise trend language and vary the verbs used to report changes, while keeping the tone formal. These improvements would make your comparisons clearer and more suitable for IELTS Academic Task 1.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You communicate the main comparisons using mostly simple sentence patterns, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, the range of structures is limited, and errors recur in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “The most grown OECD country is USA which started from 45%” needs clearer grammatical framing, while “Italy and France started from different stats, Italy with 38% and France with 30% but they ended up…” joins several ideas without effective punctuation or structure. The lowercase opening “other OECD countries” and the run-on final comparison also reduce accuracy. Practise combining information with controlled clauses, and check articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation before submitting.
