Student answer (Band 6.0)

Science plays a vital role in our everyday life. It helps us to explore our nature and environment with a comprehensive understanding of our surroundings. I totally agree to the statement that primary objective of science should be to make people's lives more better.

Firstly, one of the main reason is that science brought new innovations and technologies which assist individuals in their everyday life. After the industrial revolution numerous positive changes came to people's lives all over the world. Likewise internet boom has opened new opportunities and possibilities for public. For example, it has made whole world a global village as anyone can contact anyone by audio or video from anywhere with only requirement of internet. Furthermore, internet has made the access to any information much easier than ever before. It helped students a lot and also each individual personally.

Secondly, science has made extensive research which proved beneficial for public at large. It addressed the environmental issues which instead could have gone ignored and humanity will have to face a number of challenges. However, there are plenty of concerning topics such as global warming, climate change, etc. but scientist are continuously working to provide better solutions to these problems. Science also provided us with a variety of jobs and youngster got good employments in different fields of science.

To conclude it is clear that science has kept its focus on improving life of each individual but it keeps on do the same in future. As a result people's interaction has became easy and all the information about anything is out there for free. In addition new opportunities developed for young people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you totally agree that science should aim to improve people’s lives, and the conclusion returns to this view. The examples of internet access, communication and scientific work on environmental problems are relevant and show how science can benefit society. However, the discussion does not fully explain why improving lives should be science’s most important aim, rather than one aim among others. The point about employment is also introduced briefly but not developed, and the environmental paragraph mentions problems without giving a specific example of a scientific solution. Develop these points with clearer explanations and concrete evidence to make the argument more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “Firstly” and “Secondly”, and a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. Some links between ideas, however, are mechanical or unclear. For example, “However” introduces a list of environmental concerns, although the sentence does not set up a clear contrast, and “It” in “It helped students a lot” could refer to the internet or to information access. The conclusion also repeats benefits already discussed rather than drawing the argument together. Use linking expressions that show the precise relationship between ideas, make references explicit, and ensure each paragraph develops one connected point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “innovations and technologies”, “global village”, “environmental issues” and “global warming”. These choices help communicate the main ideas, and attempts such as “extensive research” show some ambition. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or imprecise: “explore our nature” is not a natural expression in this context, “more better” is incorrect, and “good employments” does not express the intended idea naturally. “Public” is also repeated where “people” or “the public” would fit better. Aim for precise, natural combinations and avoid repeating broad terms such as “opportunities” without specifying what they involve.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “as anyone can contact anyone … with only requirement of internet” and a relative clause in “which instead could have gone ignored”. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “one of the main reason” needs a plural noun, “scientist are” needs subject–verb agreement, and “humanity will have to face” does not fit smoothly with the past-tense framing of “It addressed”. The final sentence, “but it keeps on do the same in future”, also has an incorrect verb pattern. Check agreement and tense consistency, and proofread complex sentences for complete, correctly formed clauses.
