IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In today's world science plays an important role in improving people's lives. Although advances in science and technology have some drawbacks such as decreased creativity and increased dependency on technology, I believe that it is essential to improve people's lives by improving quality of life and innovation of technology. I largely agree that improving lives should be the main aim of science.
Due to the advances in science, a growing number of people have access to healthcare, with advanced machines and equipment. This helps to improve overall well-being of individuals because of those machines people get early diagnosis and timely treatment. For example, MRI machine detect any disease earlier and doctors treat patient accordingly and improve the prognosis of the patient. The invention of vehicles has made transport more convenient. For instance, vehicles and well-built roads allow patients to reach hospitals quickly. Furthermore, it also helps to communicate with family members who lives a mile away by the use of mobile phones, which helps to boost understanding and relationship. So, the major objective is to improve overall quality of life.
Nevertheless, science and technology also has several limitations. Firstly, people are over depending on the technology for their daily living, because of that children spend a lot of time using social medias for entertainment purpose, and it decrease creativity and face-to-face communication between family members. For example, after corona pandemic almost every member of family has their own mobile phone because of which they spend their free time using it rather than spending quality time with their family. These problems suggest that science should be guided by human needs, not just by what is technically possible.
Overall, I largely believe that the science and technology should be focused more on improving people's lives. Although it may cause dependency and reduce creativity, however its benefits in healthcare is greater.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you largely agree that science should improve people’s lives. You address both benefits and drawbacks, and the healthcare examples—early diagnosis and timely treatment—are relevant support. The discussion of transport and communication also broadens the case. This meets the task well, but some ideas are more fully explained than others: the benefits are listed across several areas, while the drawbacks focus mainly on children’s phone use and creativity. The conclusion repeats your view but does not fully weigh the examples or clarify how science should balance benefits against risks. Develop one or two central arguments further, explaining their significance and linking them directly to the question of science’s most important aim.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs consider benefits and limitations, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Nevertheless,” and “Overall” help signal the direction of the argument. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear. In the healthcare section, “because of those machines” creates an awkward link between the preceding claim and its explanation, and “it also helps” has an unclear reference. The final sentence uses “Although” and “however” together, making the relationship between the ideas less smooth. To strengthen progression, make each paragraph’s main point explicit, use pronouns with clear referents, and connect examples to the argument with more precise transitions rather than relying mainly on familiar signposting phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including relevant terms such as “healthcare,” “early diagnosis,” “timely treatment,” “prognosis,” and “dependency.” These choices help communicate your examples and show some ability to use topic-specific language. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or repetitive: “improving quality of life and innovation of technology” does not express the relationship clearly, and “over depending on the technology” is not a natural phrase. “Social medias” and “for entertainment purpose” also show imprecise forms. Aim for more natural combinations and vary repeated wording such as “improve people’s lives” and “quality of life.” More precise vocabulary would make the argument sound clearer and more controlled without requiring unnecessarily complex words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “Although,” “because,” and “which.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the response shows an attempt to connect causes, examples, and results within sentences. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “MRI machine detect” needs a singular subject and matching verb, while “family members who lives” has a plural subject with a singular verb. In “because of those machines people get,” punctuation is needed to separate the clauses, and the final sentence combines “Although” with “however” awkwardly. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and check that long sentences have clear clause boundaries. Greater accuracy across these structures would make your meaning easier to follow.
