IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In today's world, science has taken us to the next level of living standards. I strongly believe that main focus of scientific research should be improving quality of human life. However, other aims of science are also important for the future.
Beginning with my main argument, science has done wonderful discoveries for improving people's lives. For example, in medical field new medicines, vaccines, and technologies have been made. In past people died due to the illness. Nonetheless in the present world, science has found cure for many diseases which has improved life expectancy.
Furthermore, science has given us the power to use modern technology. All the information is accessible on the internet regarding education, culture, and businesses. All thanks to science, people can take advantages of artificial intelligence. For example, people can design homes and earn from an online business. Another example to look at, farmers can produce quality products in the field of agriculture just by exploring the information from internet. As a result, lives of many people improve.
Exploring the minor viewpoint, experiments and projects are carried out on daily basis which are not related to humans or environments. They are related to exploring and understanding the structure of this complex universe which might be beneficial in the future unless they cause no harm to humans.
To sum up, I agree that the most significant aim of science should be to improve people's lives. However, they should continue to explore other aspects which might bring positive changes in the next era.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly support improving human life as science’s main aim, while allowing for other research. The medical examples—vaccines, medicines and increased life expectancy—directly support this view, and the discussion of internet access and agriculture adds relevant breadth. This meets the task well, with some elements showing the fuller development expected at the next level. However, the technology paragraph lists benefits such as designing homes and earning online without explaining in detail how these improve people’s lives, and the “minor viewpoint” about exploring the universe is brief and qualified rather than fully developed. Explain the significance of these examples and weigh the value of non-human-focused research more explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs develop supporting reasons, a further paragraph considers other scientific aims, and the conclusion restates your view. The progression from medicine to technology and then to broader research is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “As a result,” and “To sum up” help signal these stages. At times, however, transitions feel formulaic, particularly “Beginning with my main argument” and “Exploring the minor viewpoint.” The technology paragraph also moves quickly between internet information, artificial intelligence, online business and farming, so the relationship among these examples is not always fully explicit. Use more natural transitions and connect each example directly to the paragraph’s central point.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “scientific research,” “vaccines,” “life expectancy,” “artificial intelligence,” and “structure of this complex universe.” These terms make the subject clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or unnatural, such as “taken us to the next level of living standards,” “wonderful discoveries,” and “take advantages of artificial intelligence.” “In the medical field” and “information from the internet” would also sound more natural than the forms used. These inaccuracies do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and fluency. Aim for accurate academic collocations and avoid broad praise such as “wonderful” when a more specific description would communicate the benefit more clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most ideas remain understandable. For example, “However, other aims of science are also important for the future” is clear, while the sentence beginning “which might be beneficial in the future” attempts to express a more complex relationship. Some grammatical errors persist, including the missing article in “the main focus,” the tense and article problems in “In past people died,” and the construction “unless they cause no harm,” which makes the intended condition unclear. There are also issues with plural and agreement patterns, as in “lives of many people improve.” Review articles, verb forms and conditional structures, and check punctuation between introductory phrases and main clauses. Greater accuracy across these patterns would strengthen control.
