IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The most crucial moto of science should be how to elevate general public lives. In my opinion, I highly advocate for this statement that science should work mostly for the reason to improve individuals lives.
The main reason for this statement is that, since the very beginning of the world science has been there and it has evolved with time which also assisted human being to a better life with its evaluations. For example, in the past people would die simply from flu and now with the help of science deadly diseases such as cancer can also be treated with significantly high success rate. And at the present we can also take COVID19 as a recent example of science improving peoples live.
In addition to all of this, science also work on discoveries of different subjects, it can vary from space to deep sea research, sometimes these can lead to conflicts for humans, but it can also solve problems as well. For instance, discovery of solar electricity has shown subsequently positive results in the lifestyle of individuals only by adding solar panels in their households and it is also useful in reducing electricity bills as well.
In conclusion, as far as I am concern, science should shift its focus mainly to aim to increase the living standards of life of individuals by inventing new technologies which can be used to make daily lives of the people better or conduct research on how to upgrade old method in order to improve the life of individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that science should primarily improve people’s lives, and the conclusion returns to this view. You support it with relevant examples, including medical treatment, COVID-19, and household solar panels. This addresses the task and gives the reader reasons for your opinion. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. The reference to science having existed “since the very beginning of the world” is broad, and the claim that discoveries can “lead to conflicts” is not illustrated or connected clearly to your main argument. To strengthen the response, explain how each example demonstrates the importance of improving lives and briefly acknowledge what other aims science may have.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons and examples, and a conclusion. The progression from medical advances to energy research is easy to follow, and phrases such as “For example” and “In addition” help signal the development of ideas. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “In addition to all of this” is somewhat mechanical, while the sentence about discoveries leading to conflicts shifts direction without explaining the relationship. The conclusion also repeats the central idea rather than synthesising the two examples. Use more precise links between claims and evidence, and make sure each sentence develops the paragraph’s main point.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “deadly diseases,” “success rate,” “discoveries,” and “solar panels.” There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “living standards,” though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural and reduce precision. For example, “moto” appears to mean “motto,” “elevate general public lives” is not a natural collocation, and “science improving peoples live” contains unclear word forms. “Evaluations” does not convey the intended meaning of scientific advances. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main argument, but more accurate collocations and careful spelling would make the response more fluent. Prefer familiar, precise expressions over ambitious wording that does not fit the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause beginning “since the very beginning” and a sentence using “which.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “science also work” needs subject–verb agreement, and “people’s live” needs a plural noun. The opening phrase “I highly advocate for this statement that” has an awkward grammatical construction, while “as far as I am concern” uses the wrong verb form. Some long sentences also need clearer punctuation, particularly the sentence beginning “The main reason for this statement is that.” Work on agreement, verb forms, possessives and sentence boundaries, while continuing to practise complex structures with accurate clause connections.
