IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that science must be developed by people's lives. I completely agree with this view because modern technology should be developed for people. I believe Science should be developed in every sector as well.

Firstly, science focuses on technology such as transportation and medical science. Most people face problems with health issues; also, they worry about the costs. When science improves medical support or transportation comfort, it also provides benefits to middle-class people. For example, many middle-class or lower-class people face the big problem of finances; when science provides high-quality support at a low price, it's more supportive. People can easily lead their lives with improvements in science.

Secondly, agriculture or education is the most valuable part of people's lives. Science also improves the education system, such as fast networking and online portal systems, which are very convenient for all educational people. Also, developing agricultural systems helps to raise the economic level. For example, science develops machines or provides proper knowledge on how to grow crops; it helps people to achieve perfect results. Therefore, online education helps save time and removes distance. People can easily join a class or any meeting from any location. People can also go to any location and see the online directions.

In conclusion, science improves people's lives and lifestyles. Science develops technology that helps people in their regular lives and activities. So I completely agree with this instruction

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you completely agree that science should improve people’s lives, and you give relevant examples from medicine, transport, education and agriculture. These examples show an understanding of the topic, but several points remain general or are not fully explained. For instance, the claim that affordable medical support benefits middle-class people would be stronger with a specific illustration of how science improves access or outcomes. The discussion of online education and directions also moves away from the central argument without clearly showing why these are science’s most important aims. The response is 14 words below the required minimum, so there is limited space to develop your reasons. Extend the examples and explain why improving lives should take priority over other scientific aims.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “Firstly” and “Secondly”, and a conclusion. The main ideas are generally grouped by topic, so the reader can follow the broad progression from health and transport to education and agriculture. However, connections between some points are mechanical or unclear. In the second body paragraph, the discussion shifts from agricultural systems to online classes and then to directions, without explaining how these examples fit together. Repeated use of “Also” and “For example” makes the linking feel formulaic, and “Therefore” does not clearly express the relationship between the preceding ideas and online education. Group related examples more tightly and use transitions that show the precise relationship between claims.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “medical science”, “agricultural systems”, “economic level” and “online portal systems”. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, which sometimes makes the intended meaning less clear. For example, “science must be developed by people’s lives” does not express the intended idea accurately, while “educational people” and “perfect results” are vague or unsuitable in context. The repeated use of “people”, “science” and “improves” also limits variety. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating broad terms when a specific one is available. This will make your argument clearer and more academic in tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple sentences and some longer structures, including clauses joined with “when” and “which”, and your meaning is usually understandable. However, control is uneven, particularly in sentence construction and punctuation. The opening sentence, “science must be developed by people’s lives”, has an unclear grammatical relationship between the ideas. In “When science improves medical support or transportation comfort, it also provides benefits”, the subject and the intended action are not expressed precisely. There are also awkwardly joined ideas, such as “Most people face problems with health issues; also, they worry about the costs.” Work on building clear subject–verb structures and punctuating connected clauses. More accurate complex sentences would help you express cause and effect without losing clarity.
