IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Science has mostly improved people's lives, but it has also hurt many people. Using science solely for human beings can be very selfish. Because people do not own earth.

On one hand, we have evolved to be more intelligent than other creatures and has been using this privilage for our own comfort. For example, we no longer need to spend hours to make fire in order to eat thanks to technology. Our living qualities has improved significantly compared to the older generations of our ancestors.

However the more we get consumed by our selfishness for improvement the more we harm the environment surrounding us. Let's take Artificial Intelligence and factories for instance, even though it simplifies our every day life, it uses tons of water per use which is also contributing to the global warming. As for factories, it makes our lives a lot easier. We do not have to hunt for food, we no longer need to make our own clothes. In contrast, the waste coming from making these things can be extremely harmful for the wildlife in both land surface and marine lives.

Because of these selfish decisions, we are contributing to the pollution of air, water and land waste. Which all harms the environment first, then the wildlife. Lastly we are also putting our well beings at risk without even realizing it.

In conclusion, rather than using science for our own goods we have to prioritize minimizing the consequences. After all, humans do not exist above any other living beings, all lives matter equally.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You present a clear position: science should not focus only on human convenience, because its effects on the environment and other living beings also matter. The examples of AI, factories, food production and clothing are relevant, and the conclusion returns to your central concern. However, the response addresses the question somewhat indirectly: it argues against human-centred use of science more than it explains the extent to which improving people’s lives should be science’s most important aim. Some points, such as the claim that AI uses large amounts of water and the link to global warming, need clearer explanation or support. To strengthen the response, state your degree of agreement explicitly and develop a balanced reason for why improving human lives remains important, alongside the environmental limits you propose.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable structure, moving from an opening position through contrasting examples to a conclusion. Paragraphing helps separate the benefits of science from its environmental costs, and signposts such as “On one hand,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make the broad progression easy to follow. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical. The opening fragment, “Because people do not own earth,” is not smoothly linked to the preceding claim, while “Which all harms the environment first” is an incomplete sentence and leaves the reference of “Which” unclear. The paragraph beginning “Because of these selfish decisions” also repeats consequences already discussed. Link each example explicitly to your position and use clearer references to avoid repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “environment,” “wildlife,” “global warming,” “pollution,” and “prioritize,” which allows you to discuss the issue clearly. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “marine lives” and “living qualities,” but these are not natural collocations and reduce precision. Other choices, including “selfishness for improvement,” “every day life,” and “our own goods,” are awkward or imprecise in context. Spelling errors such as “privilage” also affect accuracy. Aim to learn vocabulary in natural word partnerships and choose terms that express the intended meaning precisely—for example, distinguish between quality of life, convenience, environmental damage and pollution.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including the comparison “the more we get consumed … the more we harm” and the contrast introduced by “even though.” Most of your meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In “we have evolved … and has been using,” the subject and verb do not agree; “Our living qualities has improved” has a similar agreement problem. “Because people do not own earth” is a sentence fragment, and “Which all harms…” is another fragment. There are also punctuation issues where a comma joins independent clauses, as in “As for factories, it makes our lives a lot easier. We do not have to hunt…” (the first sentence also shifts number). Review subject–verb agreement and make sure dependent clauses are attached to complete sentences.
