IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 8.5)

Science has long been regarded as a driving force behind human progress. While it serves multiple purposes, I strongly agree that its foremost aim should be to improve people’s lives. Advancements in science have consistently enhanced human well-being, and prioritizing this objective ensures that innovation remains meaningful, ethical, and beneficial to society.

To begin with, scientific developments have dramatically improved health and life expectancy. Breakthroughs in medicine, such as vaccines, antibiotics, and advanced surgical techniques, have saved millions of lives and reduced suffering worldwide. For example, the rapid development of vaccines during global health crises has demonstrated how science can directly protect humanity. If the primary focus of science were not human welfare, such life-saving innovations might not receive the same level of attention or funding.

In addition, science plays a crucial role in addressing everyday challenges and improving living standards. Technological advancements have made communication faster, transportation more efficient, and access to information easier than ever before. Devices such as smartphones and the internet have transformed education and business, enabling people to learn, work, and connect globally. These improvements highlight how science can enhance convenience and productivity, ultimately leading to a better quality of life.

Moreover, prioritizing the improvement of human life encourages ethical responsibility in scientific research. Without this guiding principle, scientific progress could be misused for harmful purposes, such as the development of destructive weapons or environmentally damaging technologies. By focusing on human well-being, governments and institutions can ensure that research is directed toward solving critical issues like climate change, poverty, and resource scarcity.

However, it is also important to recognize that science should not be limited solely to immediate practical benefits. Fundamental or theoretical research, which may not have direct applications at first, often leads to significant breakthroughs in the long term. For instance, early research in physics laid the foundation for modern electronics and medical imaging technologies. Therefore, while improving people’s lives should remain the central aim, supporting curiosity-driven research is equally essential.

In conclusion, science should primarily aim to enhance human life, as this focus drives meaningful innovation, promotes ethical practices, and addresses global challenges. Nevertheless, a balanced approach that also values fundamental research is necessary to ensure continued progress and unexpected discoveries that may benefit future generations.
