IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is a widespread belief that the most essential goal of science should be improving lives of individuals. I agree with this preposition to a large extent because it plays a vital role in healthcare industry and facilitates weather forecasting.
The foremost reason why I subscribe to this viewpoint is that scientific research enables efficiency in healthcare industry. This is primarily because technological innovation has played a key role to improve quality of people's lives as professionals diagnose disease early. As a result, this enables them to detect and mitigate the disease with effective treatments. For instance, some scientific innovations facilitate in disease prevention for an individual suffering from cancer in the very first stage and address cure for it.
Another equally significant reason is that science enables climate change monitoring, which helps to predict the disaster earlier and creates awareness among people. This can be achieved by telecasting the upcoming disasters in different platforms. A striking example can be seen in the lives of farmers whose whole life is dependent on agricultural activities as it is their only source of income, with the help of primitive weather reports they would get well prepared.
Admittedly, some people argue that raw materials are declining due to extraction of raw materials for scientific development. Manufacturing solar panels, batteries, etc requires mining rare materials, which can damage ecosystems if poorly maintained. Nevertheless, this leads to development of society in several ways as these batteries are used in electric vehicles which provide a sustainable future.
In conclusion, I acknowledge that this view has certain limitations, I agree with it to a large extent. Given its capacity to contribute in healthcare industry and enabling weather forecasting, the advantages associated with this approach are undeniable and far outweigh any potential drawbacks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all parts of the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout the essay. Your ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the role of healthcare and climate monitoring. However, the development of these ideas could be more nuanced. For instance, the discussion on climate change is a bit brief, and the connection between 'primitive weather reports' and the prompt's focus on improving lives could be more explicitly linked. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are fully explored to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the topic. Overall, you have provided a solid, well-structured response that directly answers the question.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Your essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use cohesive devices like 'The foremost reason,' 'Another equally significant reason,' and 'Nevertheless' effectively to transition between ideas. However, some of the referencing is slightly mechanical, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text, which makes the essay easy to read and follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'mitigate the disease,' 'technological innovation,' and 'sustainable future' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'preposition' instead of 'proposition' or 'position,' and 'facilitate in disease prevention' which is slightly awkward. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, there are occasional inaccuracies in collocation. To improve, focus on refining your word choices to ensure they sound more natural and precise in an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'improving lives of individuals' (missing 'the'), 'facilitates weather forecasting' (could be more specific), and 'address cure for it' (should be 'provide a cure'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in the conclusion where a comma splice occurs. Despite these errors, your grammar does not impede communication, and you show a good grasp of sentence construction.
