IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.5)
Science has played a vital role in shaping the modern world by improving healthcare, transportation, communication, and many other aspects of daily life. While some people believe that scientific research should focus on expanding knowledge regardless of its practical use, I strongly agree that the primary aim of science should be to improve people's lives.
The first reason is that science has significantly enhanced the quality of life. In the field of medicine, scientists have developed vaccines, antibiotics, and advanced surgical techniques that have saved millions of lives. Moreover, modern technology has made communication and education more accessible. For example, online learning platforms and artificial intelligence tools enable students to access quality education regardless of their location. These developments have made life easier, healthier, and more productive.
Another important reason is that science helps solve global challenges. Researchers are developing renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to reduce pollution and combat climate change. In agriculture, scientific innovations have increased crop production and improved food security, helping to feed a growing population. Furthermore, scientific advancements in disaster prediction and weather forecasting help governments prepare for natural disasters and protect human lives.
However, some people argue that science should also focus on expanding human knowledge, even if there are no immediate practical benefits. For instance, research in astronomy and space exploration has deepened our understanding of the universe. Although these discoveries may not directly improve daily life, they often lead to unexpected technological innovations in the future. Therefore, basic scientific research should not be ignored.
In conclusion, although scientific research aimed at expanding knowledge is valuable, I believe that the most important objective of science should be to improve people's lives. By addressing health, environmental, educational, and technological challenges, science continues to make the world a safer and better place for everyone.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with specific examples provided for each point, such as the mention of vaccines, antibiotics, and renewable energy. The counter-argument is acknowledged and balanced appropriately, showing a sophisticated understanding of the topic. The conclusion effectively synthesizes your main points, reinforcing your stance. The essay is well-structured and directly answers the 'to what extent' component of the question.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Therefore', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the response. Referencing is consistent, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words. The structure is highly coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. There is a good mix of general and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'scientific innovations', 'renewable energy sources', and 'disaster prediction'. The word choice is natural and appropriate for an academic context. While the vocabulary is accurate and effective, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band, perhaps by incorporating more nuanced collocations or idiomatic academic phrasing. Nevertheless, the range is more than adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although these discoveries may not directly improve daily life, they often lead to...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of accuracy, which is consistent with a strong command of English grammar.
