Student answer (Band 8.0)

In the modern world, science plays a vital role in improving people's lives. I strongly agree that the primary aim of science should be to enhance human well-being because scientific advancements have made remarkable contributions to medicine, technology, and environmental protection.

To begin with, science has had a profound impact on medical advancement. In the past, millions of people died from deadly diseases such as the plague, which claimed around two million lives. However, through scientific research, scientists developed effective treatments and vaccines that saved countless lives. Today, researchers are continuing to make groundbreaking medical discoveries, particularly in the search for more effective cancer treatments. These innovations give hope to millions of patients and significantly improve their quality of life.

Another area where science has transformed people's lives is technology. Thanks to technological innovation, people living in rural areas now have access to the internet and can attend online classes taught by well-known professors around the world. As a result, they can improve their knowledge and develop valuable skills regardless of where they live. Furthermore, modern communication technologies allow individuals to communicate instantly with friends and family across long distances through smartphones and video calls. In addition, people can obtain information within seconds, making everyday life more convenient and efficient.

Moreover, science has made significant contributions to environmental protection. For example, the development of renewable energy sources such as solar power has reduced our dependence on fossil fuels. Consequently, carbon emissions and air pollution can be reduced, leading to a cleaner environment and better public health. Scientific research has also encouraged sustainable development, helping societies protect natural resources for future generations.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the main objective of science should be to improve people's lives. Through medical breakthroughs, technological innovation, and environmental protection, science continues to enhance the quality of life and create a healthier, more sustainable future for humanity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. Each paragraph is well-developed with relevant examples, such as the mention of vaccines for medicine and solar power for environmental protection. The ideas are extended logically, providing a balanced view of how science impacts various sectors of society. The conclusion effectively summarises your main points and reinforces your initial stance. The response is focused, relevant, and demonstrates a strong understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Another area', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. The use of referencing is accurate, and the flow of information is easy to follow. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct arguments, which enhances the overall readability of the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words; rather, they are integrated naturally into the structure of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context. Phrases like 'profound impact', 'groundbreaking medical discoveries', and 'sustainable development' show a good level of precision. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it could be further elevated to reach the highest band by incorporating more sophisticated, less common collocations or idiomatic academic expressions. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your ideas clearly and effectively without any noticeable errors in word choice or collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional-like structures ('if... regardless of where they live') and relative clauses ('which claimed around two million lives'). The grammar is generally accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. While there is a solid control of grammar, a wider variety of more complex, nuanced sentence patterns could be employed to demonstrate even greater flexibility and control over the language.
