IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
There is always an argument between people that science is very important to improve the quality of life of people. Although I agree with the argument, but I do not completely believe that science alone is responsible for improving people's lives.
On the one hand there are individuals who agree that advancements in science can directly affect the standard of living. For example, working individuals who live in cities and those who have access to advanced technology are able to complete their work more efficiently and in less number of hours and this way they earn more money, finally improving their standard of living. Not only that, advancements in technology brings people more closer leading to a happier society. Today, a lot of knowledge related to any field is available on all online platforms and this is made possible only with the help of technology.
On the other hand, there are people who say that subjects other than science such as arts, political science, commerce etcetera are also responsible for improving the quality of life of individuals. They argue that people who are good at political science and who understand the laws better are able to meaningfully contribute to the society and contribute in uplifting the society as a whole. Similarly, people from economics background help in building the economy of the state or country and thereby creating a lot of job opportunities, which directly influences the quality of life.
In conclusion, I believe that science is responsible for improving the lives of people, but it is not the sole reason for increasing the standard of living of individuals in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You acknowledge the importance of science while arguing that other fields are also vital. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the role of technology in efficiency and the contribution of economics to job creation. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial; for instance, the link between political science and quality of life could be more deeply explored with specific examples. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully extended rather than just stated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'Similarly' effectively to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, which meets the requirements for a solid band 6 or 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'advancements', 'standard of living', and 'economic background'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the sophistication or 'less common' items required for higher bands. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, but the range is limited to fairly standard, functional language. To improve, try incorporating more precise collocations and academic synonyms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'brings people more closer' (redundant comparative) and 'in less number of hours' (awkward phrasing). Additionally, the opening sentence contains a minor error: 'There is always an argument between people that...' is slightly unnatural. The majority of your sentences are error-free, but the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. Focusing on more varied sentence patterns and refining your control over prepositions will help improve your score.
