IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

There is a belief that the foremost objective of science should be to improve the quality of people’s lives. I strongly agree with this notion because science is a study that spans through all human endeavors has the ability to revolutionize transportation, health and solve global problems.

Science is the study of the physical world and because of its wide reach it encompasses all aspects concerning humans. This knowledge can only have meaning if humans can use it to benefit themselves in form of safety or ease. Science has given rise to many gadgets such as toothpaste that improve hygiene and prevent problems relating to oral health, cranes which cut down the number of people needed for constructions and telephones that allow global connectivity. If the scientists related to these fields kept this knowledge to themselves man will remain primitive an continue suffering with the same issues forever.

Moreover, there is no other field of study that is encompassing enough to have the knowledge needed to solve the problems man faces. In addition, the knowledge of scientists was not a mistake, rather it took time to experiment and reach it. The best way to use this scientific knowledge is not just to share it but to use it in practical ways. Thomas Edison took several trials experimenting on the light bulb, but he would not have gained relevance if the light bulb was not better than lanterns in any way.

To conclude, science has a vast bank of knowledge capable of addressing any problem a person might have. This intelligence is not easily obtained and for it to bring fame or accomplishment to any scientist it must be relevant and must solve humanity's problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of hygiene and global connectivity, which directly support the argument that science should improve lives. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the paragraph regarding Thomas Edison is a bit tangential; while it touches on the utility of inventions, it could have been more tightly linked to the broader societal impact of science. To reach a higher band, ensure that every example is explicitly connected back to the prompt's core theme of 'improving people's lives' with more depth and analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'To conclude' to signal transitions between ideas. However, some of the linking is slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the discussion of gadgets and the paragraph about Thomas Edison feels a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the central topic of each paragraph is generally clear, which helps the reader follow your argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'foremost objective', 'revolutionize', and 'global connectivity'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'science is a study that spans through all human endeavors has the ability', where the sentence structure makes the vocabulary usage feel slightly awkward. Additionally, 'man will remain primitive an continue suffering' contains a small typo ('an' instead of 'and'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and ensure that your word choices are consistently natural in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'science is a study that spans through all human endeavors has the ability' is a run-on/fused sentence that lacks a proper relative pronoun or conjunction. There are also minor errors in verb agreement and tense, such as 'If the scientists... kept this knowledge... man will remain', which should ideally use a consistent conditional structure (e.g., 'If scientists kept... man would remain'). Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band.
